Do shrimp and crays make good tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am keeping CPOs with 100's of Red Cherry Shrimps and I have one cray in particular that actively hunts the shrimps. When he catches one he eats the head and leaves the rest. I think perhaps the other male CPO in the tank is learning the behavior because I see him trying to catch the shrimps now. Thank goodness they can't catch the shrimps to often!

I have 4 cpo cray fish in my 10 gallon with my dwarf shrimp(various colors) and lots of shrimp fry. I have one berried cpo and about 10 berried shrimp. One of my cpos is currently berried and my shrimp fry constantly land on her to clean her and she lets them until she gets annoyed and shoos them off. If you don’t feed your cpos a lot they will instinctively eat anything they can catch, I saw one of my cpos eating one of my snails the day I didn’t give them the right food. They are picky and hearty eaters if you feed them more they should leave your shrimp alone. I generally feed mine a few pinches of shrimp and lobster pellets along with about 8 or 9 Wardley Shrimp pellets for them and my Cory cats.

I never had a problem with my Mexican dwarfs eating my shrimp. They even fry even hide in the same plant as my male Mexican cray and he leaves the, walk on him..... it could be because I have yelled at them and was told that they are smart so I’m kinda training them in a sense. They only know me as their owner so I can freely take them out without being pinched and Taco(a male cray) will sometimes walk up my arm while I’m cleaning the tank.

Unless you have a strong colony of shrimp and a very well fed cray expect some of the shrimp to go missing...
