do tanganyikan and malawi need hard water?

The most important thing so is stability. They can acclimate to slightly lower PH/KH water than they prefer and will do fine as long as it stays that way. Going through large swings if you try to use a chemical buffer will be much harder on them. That being said using rocks/substrate to buffer your water is always beneficial unless you already have terribly hard water like I do here.
