i bought some sand and it came with a lil pouch of liquid which said i could add fish on the same day? this is a brand new tank. does this actually work or is it a bit gimmicky? i know i cant add all my fish at once. its all about slowly stocking.

Doubtful, but there are some cycling products that greatly speed up cycling time. I have yet to come across anything that will instantly cycle a tank, but have had luck with dosing a tank with Seachem Prime and Stability... also had luck with Tetra Safe Start but that cycle crashed.

I used that stuff thinking 'wtf could it hurt?' the answer is nothing, but I did have cobweb looking things all over the tank the next morning. I wiped a bulk of them off with my hand an they haven't showed up since, knock on wood. In the future I will not use it again... will also wash the sand even though the bag says no rinse. :wall:

ok thanks for the help guys, think i might give this one a miss!!

how fast will these products speed up the cycling time?

thanks
Matt

I completely cycled my 125 gallon in about 5 days with a seeded sponge filter and seachem stability.

Every tank is different... Depends a lot on ph and other factors... seeded media from an established tanks helps a bunch too, but isn't necessary.

I would say... with seachem stability (remember you can dose with Seachem Prime with stability, which makes cycling a lot less stressful on fish) you would expect to see a nitrite reading in about 5-7 days, and be cycled in about 7-10 days.

I did a fishless cycle in about 12 days with Tetra Safe Start, but I found it less stable than stability, as you can only add it once and wait, while with stability you add it every day until you are cycled, and you can do water changes and use prime without killing it.

If you can get some used media from your lfs your tank should be ready to go in 24 to 48 hrs . Ive done this many times and have yet to lose a fish.

I have always done the same with my tanks (sized 15g-58g) for the last 12 years, haven't lost a fish this way yet. But thinking of cycle it a bit longer in my new tank that is slightly bigger (120g), just to be safe :)
