do they need sand?

You can go sand, round gravel or bar bottom. I personally prefer sand, but I don't use that much. 50lb per 100gl is what I do.

how do you define "happy" when it comes to a fish? ive always wondered how some folks seem to be fish whisperers :)

tank's doing good man! they swim, eat and poop. so im guessing theyre happy :D

Gravel is a good medium; it's easy to clean, and it gives them something to hide/hunt in. They eat it, as well, as I've had them purge it when moved to bare-bottom tanks.

You can't tell when your fish are happy? One of the first and foremost things people say about stingrays is that they have "personalities" They also have memories.

How many ray keepers here have said that their fish get upset during water changes and gravel vaccing? If they can become upset or agitated then I think they can also feel peace and contentment.

Do your Rays come to the front of the tank and swim to the top looking for food when you walk into the room? Or do they move to the back of the tank when you approach it? If it's the latter maybe your rays are un"happy".

Stingrays are excitable, and they can also get agitated. They definitely have their little Zen time in front of the tank with us after a good feeding; we hand feed them, and then sit in front of the tank and they line up to look at us and hang out there. They are playful, as well, and it seems that happiness is easy to notice with stingrays. They undulate/rest, hunt, and glide around the tank lightly when they are content. With the introduction of new neighbors, they get curious and sometimes concerned. You should have seen the way my little hystrix were looking at the 13+" arowana that was cruising around the tank when we first added them; they were standoffish and evasive at first, but they got to know him as the gentle giant that he is and now they even share worms with him (as in, the stingray will grab the worm, wrestle and strike it against the gravel to stun it, and then the arowana will carefully tear off part of the dangling end of the worm while the stingray is still chewing on the other end).

It is obvious to even the most casual observations that stingrays have very complex personalities, attitudes and demeanors.
