i think my gar can digest the corn..coz my gar eats everything roaches, lizards, hotdog, chopped meat everything you will throw on the tank he eats it..but he died last 5 years ago.. :(

I'm a bit concerned after reading this thread. I got a paradise fish about 2 months ago, and I tried a few different foods on her to pamper her as her fins were quite badly nipped and she was seriously stressed, hiding from a male (who has since been sent off). She is fine now, but she never showed much interest in any frozen foods. She eats flake, and placidly munches daphnia like someone watching TV and eating yummy crisps.

But what she really seems to love is corn. I take a spoonful of frozen corn, boil in a little water in the microwave for two minutes, then cool it and refrigerate it. To feed, I skin a piece and crush the inside open between my fingers. I drop two pieces into the tank, one for her and one for the weather loach, and she attacks it like it was alive. She rushes forward and savagely rips pieces off to eat. After she is finished she hopefully goes over the remaining skin bits to see if there is any left that she likes. She only eats the soft part of the insides, not the tougher bits.

And if I do not give her enough, or give her flake only in the morning, after a while she comes to the side of the glass and does some kind of semaphore thing as if to say, "I only like corn". If I give her her corn, she eats and goes cruising or resting for the rest of the day like a normal fish. Until supper time. Then it's like, "I only eat corn", again. If I give her flake, she eats a few then checks the tank then "I only eats corn!".

She has had corn and a litttle flake every day for the last 6 weeks, and seems very healthy and happy... Do you reallly think the corn is hurting her?

Any ideas how else I can spoil her?

PS. After the male got sent off, in the next few days her fins unclamped and started to flow out beautifully, and then I saw she had 3 fins broken near their tips. The tips flop about like a flag. No signs of disease. Both the tips and the main part of the fins seem clear and healthy. One tip has just fallen off. I hope it is going to grow back.

Granted i am no expert. I am very shocked that it would strike anyone as a good idea to feed corn to their fish. If we humans cant digest it for **** and your dog cant digest it for **** what would cause one to think that fish would be able to digest it.
The shell of corn is very tough and can withstand the acids in the digestive tract thereby making it almost useless as a food item to any animal that does not chew it enough to pulverize the shell.
That being said, Why would anyone want to risk it harming their fish when there are clearly better options out there. Just my 2 cents.

I remove the outer shell and crush the inner coat, exposing the inside soft part of the corn. She is a young fish, about 1.5" long, and cannot eat a whole corn. Also, corn is a staple food for many peoples, they also crush it with their teeth or grind it first.

Is there anyone who knows of any bad effect from the inner corn itself, other than the whoke kernel choking the fish or not being digested?

Because this fish certainly seems to be thriving on it, and really does seem to insist on it.

The only way I would even try it would be to squeeze the inside of the kernel out and feed that to the fish no skin. I do that with sweet peas and all my fish love it, but the skin the peas have are a concern just like I think corn would be.

Corn is not a good food to feed to fish. There are other vegetables that are good alternatives. Peas, zuchinni, other squash, pumpkin, green beans, and cooked carrots are great for fish.
