Do we replicate the natural environment temperature?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

Tomorrow I am dropping the heat thermostats to 70. To conserve energy/cut cost. I do not expect any problems. -FM

its pointless at such a low temp

if you are trying to save money then you cant afford to keep the rays so you best sell them :D

I would think 70 F would be a bit too low for rays, especially long term.

Ok so we know the waters are lower temps than we keep are rays but wasn't there also a discussion of the rays going into the shallow waters during the day to bask in the sun? There should be a big difference in temp from the shallows mid-day to the bottom of the rivers. Are they using this extra heat for aid in metabolising food? Is this what they prefer but can survive in lower temps. With rays being able to move in and out of different waters to me it would be hard to say which would be healthier for the ray.

Having been to several ray habitats you may find the guys that keep them at 82-84f are doing it right for most of the rays .
The original post is about the rio negro not one of the most prolific places for rays so the temperatures there are not that important.

Well...FireMedic must be doing something right because his rays are humping like jack rabbits regularly:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

I know for a fact that higher temps help if not stop alot of parasites, fungus, and helps the rays stay active and hungry. We can all attest that in the wild the conditions are not always optimum. and the fish most likely live longer lives in captivity. some people also think it is good to feed the rays everyday. which i also do. but in the wild they might be lucky to eat once a week. We def. dont know much about rays in general, and pretty much just learn from our mistakes
