My texas had his rock structure collapse on him while he was digging. He was scraped on the side by the rock. It has been a week and is appearing like there is white cotton like growths prodruding from the wound which is not healing. Should I hospital tank him and treat him for a fungus? Do wounds turn into diseases?

Yes, wounds can develop fungus. I would treat for fungus, and treat the wound with melafix. Also, add one teaspoon of salt per gallon.

Thanks, that's what I am thinking too. I am moving him to the 26 gallon hospital tank and treating him.

Good move. Good luck with him.

Ewurm is correct.

Wonded fish are just like people. If you get a cut, it will often heal up fine by itself, but sometimes it can get infected and you need antibiotics etc to help it heal.

If you can see fungus starting to grow, then get it out and treat it so it doesn't get worse.

Cheers

Ian

I use a homemade salt mix using 50ml fungus cure mixed into 2 kilograms each of fine sea salt & fine rock salt + 4 teaspoons of Epson salts. (salt should be green and well mixed)
I use this for everything as a first measure, water changes - adding new fish - any sign of stress - physical damage: body & fins.... In moderation!
"Quoting ewurm" 1 teaspoon per gallon - ...... I personally use this dose on scale-less fish, loach's and the like but have "personally" found that cichlids in particular respond very well with up to 3 teaspoons / gal.

For fungus I suggest Moroxy and perhaps Melafix and salt as well. Clean water is key, keep those nitrates down and water clean.

Just as a side note, have you treated the wounds the moment you saw it? It is always recommended to treat them immediately with Melafix or doing plenty of water changes before secondary infections like fungus develop.

You can also lightly swab the wounds with either iodine or hydrogen peroxide to start breaking up the secondary infection, them quickly return the fish to your medicated water. Wear rubber gloves while doing so to reduce damage to the slime coat.

The fungus does not seem to be improving. I have her in a 26 gallon bowfront by herself. I used Jungle Fungus Tablets, salt, and melafix. It seems to be getting worse.
