Do yall have a plan?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So funny to come across this thread. My husband and I were just discussing this, this past weekend when I was doing my water change. I take care of the indoor fish and I taught him to do the outside pond. I told him, if anything happens to me figure it out, just like I have to figure everything out! That being said, when he had surgery and I had surgery I made sure all maint. was done to give us atleast 2 weeks for recoveries. I also do maint. if I know there may be a BIG storm coming that could cause loss of electric. I’m a pre-planner for sure, but if I “pass on” someone will have to step up.

I can just imagine trying to teach my lad about the hobby so he can take over from me some day. It'd go something like this......

Me....
"Right, Liam (my 14 year old), today son I want to talk to you about the nitrogen cycle".

Liam....
"What's that dad, is it one of them bikes like a BMX?

Me....
"No son, it's very very basic hobby related stuff that you need to understand in order to keep your fish alive. It involves bacteria called nitrosomnas and nitrobacter"

Liam.... (his eyes widen with interest)
"Oh dad, I know about that stuff, we're doing it in school at the minute, it blows stuff up, it's well cool".

Me.... (clenching my fists, my right eye twitching a little)
"No son, that would be nitroglycerin".

Liam....(a vacant look takes over his features)
"Oh ok dad, but that sounds boring, can't you teach me about that big fish you've got in the living room instead, you know that giant salami".

Me....(my temperature rising and my cheeks turning a deep shade of red)
"ARRGGGHHH, THAT IS A GIANT GOURAMI!!!!"

Liam....
"Can I go to my room now dad and play on my playstation, i'm exhausted after today's lesson".

And I could go on and on and on.

Lmfao, thats gold...

But anyway, if hes not into now, he may still get into the hobby one day...

know we have a few older members here, in fact we have in our midst, possibly the oldest man on the planet in skjl47, who is rumoured to be 127 years old! So it's the age thing that i'd be interested in more than ill health.
Hello; I am beginning to make adjustments. Example is I have been using five gallon containers for storing my WC water. (Note- my tap water in treated only with chlorine so I can let it sit a few days.) I now have some three gallon jugs which are easier to pickup. Not sure when I will retire the 5 gal but the time is coming.

The other thing I do I have a very light stocking load and have live plants in all my tanks. That gives me a bit of a cushion in the sense if I do not feel like doing a WC on a particular day, it can wait a bit.

I live alone and do not have anyone to call on. No clubs nor fish shops near by (closest fish shop is over 50 miles away). If I go down then the fish will eventually go down.

Chances are that I'll end up alone in my old age and I've already made a plan for that. Make friends with a neighbor and have them check on me daily until they find me dead then they call someone that has been prechosen to take care of the various animals.

I must say I haven't planned for any such thing, where I can't even get up and turn a tap.

Would have to hire someone the day anything like that happens.

Hiring someone seems like a good solution but only for a short term because money would run out if you were actually so sick you couldn't leave the house.

I’m liking the way this thread is going but I’m suprised no one has yet mentioned an automatic water changing system.
I 16, if i get so ILL i cant change water, then i will leave it, cause at this age and that sickness i wont make it past 17. Thank god iam pretty healthy and big for my age. lol Automatic water change only comes to mind if i ever travel and if i lived in a house i could try RIP.

To be completely honest instead of getting more fish to stock two 75 gallon tanks I recently got I’ve decided to just spread my fish out between them to lower the maintance since this recent bout of sickness did have me worried about my ability to takr care of my fish in the future should this happen again but for a longer period of time.
