Well, it really depends on your method of thought. To me, one GENUS is enough.

if one is not enough, then what combination of fishes do you have in your tanks?dont have to be in one tank, but currently I have 4 tanks running,
the 1st is for my bichirs and plecos,
2nd is for oscars
3rd is for CKs
and last is for more peacefull fish like corys, and raphael cat fish,
and if I see other interesting fishes in lfs, the chances are I will get them

I agree.
Mine gets his tank all to himself. The other tanks though all have more than one. And yup I can't imagine just having one tank.

if i were only allowed to have 1 fish, and it could be a bgk in a 500gal planted tank, i would be happy.

No way that's enough. I started fishkeeping with a betta about 14 months ago. Now I have 4 tanks running, soon to be adding a fifth (My 75g when I get the money for a filter and stand)
If I could only have one I would bend the rules and get a massive tank with an aripima (spelling) and add a ton of hiding places for small fish. Then would add tiny pacu and RTC as "feeders" and the ones who survived until they were to big to be eaten would reside in the tank.
