i clean out the sponges in my inturnal filters every 3 weeks rince with tank water and change the polyfilter in them

the exturnal filter pro3 2080 i just open them up every 6 months and change the white filter pad

I rinse it in tank water, but only when it starts to look really funky. Basically once every few months...

I rinse my hang on the backs every two weeks, my mini bioballs once in about 3-6 months, and my large bioballs never...

Heck yeah,detritus impedes flow! I fill a 5 gallon bucket halfway,and then move them around/agitate them in that water.

from what ive seen just moving them out does that in your sump.
then you have a dirty sump.
