Just like the question in the title, do you ever think of taking a step back to simplify the hobby? With this bad economy times are tough for everyone and like everyone I do not want to over spend on this hobby. Do you think of shutting down a few tanks to minimized the extra expense of heating, water, food, chemicals, and equipment? What do you guys think about when you go through this phase?

I haven't even considered it. There aren't too many local people that would be able to house my fish properly for life so I feel obligated to keep them.

That's exactly how I feel, too. It's so hard to cut back when I feel OBLIGATED to giving the fish a good home. I have a hard time deciding to cut back.

not really. considering i only have 2 tanks (a 150 and 29) i dont have the need to cut back. i was considering breaking down my 29 g and moving my pleco to my 150 but theres no way im catching that pleco he hides in his giant castlle everytime i try and i lift up the castle and he stays stuck to it in a tiny crevice i cant get him out of so it looks like unless i get really lucky and catch him im not breaking down my smaller tank

I cut back from 1000 total gallons (in like 15 tanks) to 1 eighty gallon tank. I plan to upgrade to a 100g at the end of the month....

I cut back over the summer, I went from 8 tanks down to 2. Various contributing factors from financial to time consumption went into the downshift of tanks.

I will say that I am a lot happier now as I have two tanks that I can focus my attention on verse 8 tanks that I spent the majority of my time maintaining.

I already did back in the 90's(early 95). In my peak, I had 26 tanks in my house with over 300 fish. I worked 10 hours a day 7 days a week... I was in the process of going back to school to change my career. I was spending almost 4 hours a day tending to the tanks. This was too much for me, 2 years later I was under 17 tanks.

Around 2002 I was down to 2 tanks(190 and 125) but hated the silence in my bedroom so I started my 80 gallon back up. In late 2003 the 190 gallon leaked... it was shut down. In Mid 2005 the wife came and made my shut the 80 gallon back down but allowed me to start up a 20 gallon long in the dining room.

Late last year when we moved, she would not allow the 125 to follow, I swapped it with a 55 gallon... also no room for the 20. So I'm down to one.... but she is ok with the idea of a pond outside

Joe,
If you feel you have too many tank, then you do have too many tank. If you feel you need to cut back, then you cut back. Just like the old saying, "If it's too good to be true, it is!" :D

Just like Rich once said, "It's individual decision made by individual adult!" :D Everything else (bad economy, too busy, etc...) is just an excuse ;)
