I use a python for any of my tanks over 40 gallons and I vacuum the gravel every time I pick up some stuff but I find most fish crap and what not under the rocks etc ..... but I digress

Do you vacuum the substrate every water change or do you just let the siphon pull the water out and change the water?

i gravel vac

i do at least a little everytime, sometimes more thorough then others, but i usually pic up at least a bit of ****

I found the need to gravel vac with every weekly water change...

And I found the need to be more of a pain than I was comfortable with...

Now that I've switched to sand, I start a siphon, use a powerhead or my hand to swoosh waste out of the decor, clean the surface of the sand, then leave the hose to drain whatever else is needed...

In my gravel days, I used to find I would drain the volume of water I intended but still wasn't finished vacuuming...

Now that I use sand, cleaning the substrate goes quick and I end up spending half of my "water change" time sitting on the couch...

Snad & a long hose sure is an improvement over gravel vacs and carrying buckets... I sure don't miss 'the good ole days'...

I gravelvac every wc. I usually get a bucket or 2 of dark green-brown water

I gravel vac thoroughly every water change - Although I only have about 1/4" of substrate, and vacuum terds every other day if I can.
