Do you guys think powerheads are reall necessary?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there also good for airation ////but i see u say u have a bubble wall of 6ft so really u dont need it,the power head that is

Powerheads have their uses. I use them quite a bit to keep algae at bay in planted tanks. While having more filtration actually slows the growth of my plants, the powerheads just move it around.

Modern powerheads are all based on the 'mag-drive' types of pumps and eventually the impeller magnet loses it's charge and the flow drops. You can remagnitize them....replace the impeller or buy a new unit.
Except the Hydor Koralia series, which use a turbine. Very good powerheads. :D

i prefer to use them for additional aeration rather than air stones because i've found air pumps are noisy as hell in comparison. i also like to have plenty of flow in my tanks to keep particles suspended until they can get caught in the filter.

I'll second that. I hate the sound of a vibrating air pump, but find the sound of water trickling very soothing.

I like powerheads to eliminate dead water in deep tanks or to establish flow patterns and prevent detritus from settling on the bottom of the tank.

I agree with guppy I use a power head in my bare bottom tank to stir things up so the filter can do its job

But they definitely are not a necessity
