I'm picking up a red morph tomorrow, should be cool. I've researched them and they'll be perfect for my tank. Especially since the main plant I'm growing are dwarf lilies.

Do any of you have this species? Pics and experience is appreciated. I'm hoping you have pics of large adults... I've seen the pics on google already lol I need more!!!

TIA

Well, here are a couple pics I snapped while in the store. They only had 2 and one has nicer colors than the other, so you can already tell which one I'm picking up lol.

Not bad for cellphone pics:

Which one do you think I should pick up? The first one or the second one?

Mine aren't fully grown yet. Just a foot long now. They've never bothered any tankmates. In fact they don't seem to take much notice of anything that can't fit in their mouths. They'll feed on just about anything dropped into the tank; minnows, shrimp, aro sticks, crumbles, pellets, stick foods, etc. Although, I've never seen them go after flake foods.

Wow, gorgeous fish you have there Oddball! Did you raise it to that size, or purchased a larger one?

If you raised it, do they grow quickly?

Thanks

In my experience, they don't grow fast, and also in my experience they do eat flakes. Like Oddball says, they eat anything - mine just ate flakes in addition. They are guppy addicts, though. They don't bother anyone else, and are easygoing. One might call them dull in the aspect that they don't interact as much with their owners as other Cichlids, but I truly did enjoy mine while I had them. Nothing quite like them out there. I've only had them in groups, so I'm not sure how a single specimen would behave - it probably will be a bit shy all by itself at first. In groups they aren't.

Thanks for the insight santoury... maybe I should just get both then.

Defientely get more than one if you can!

I have my "quartet" since Christmas and have noticed a few interesting traits so far:

1) Yes, these are calm, easy going fish
2) They seem to be always hungry but unlike other cichlids they are not as wiling to explore new foods. Snooks will often starve themselves for days before accepting a new pellet or what not but once they do start eating it, they will almost leap out of the water to grab some
3) Unlike most other CA cichlids, these are quite sensitive to water paramters refusing to eat even when there is a slioghtest fluctuation
4) They are incredibly messy. Far worst in my opinion than oscars and other large cichlids. You also have to use a slightly different technique when feeding them: Since their mouths are so big and they are generally very greedy, petenias will often gourge themselves with food, stuffing their protrusive jaws to the limit. The problem is that while they have such huge mouths, their throat openning are proportionate to their overall size. As a result, snooks will often continue grabbing pellets or flakes as long as you are dopping them in, then swim for a while with a full mouth, and suddenly release all the food half an hour later when they realize that the load is impossible to swallow. Needless to say, this creates an enormous mess! Plus, the turds they produce are the size of my cat's (and I mean a feline here)!
5) Males are definetely more outgoing than the females who tend to hang in the back of the tank and in their own territory. Males generally are free roamers

Get the fish man. Make sure your tank/pond is large enough and that you have sufficient filtration. You will like them for sure

oddball that is one nice fish!

but i agree with oddball mine always use to eat what was dropped in the tank. but like his mine never really went for flakes!:screwy: it might not have seen it was a food source just some leaves!:screwy:
