do you have sympathy for feeder gold fish?

Thousands of dogs and cats are euthanized every year in shelters in Las Vegas alone. Those are the pets that were turned in, the few who were adopted by responsible pet owners were neutered and micro-chipped before being adopted and are now better off. Adopting merely opens space to keep another animal from being euthanized, these shelters are usually taxpayer or private donor funded and don't make profits off of minuscule adoption fees. The only racket making money is the dip**** on the corner selling fat head pitbulls and the puppy mills.

PETA and SPCA are the leading force in driving responsible pet ownership - spay, neutering and micro-chipping. They are also the leading force in banning puppy mills or imposing strict regulation. They are also pushing for mandatory spay/neuter laws in most metropolitan areas, with an exemption for breeders. Both of them also face a lot of criticism for not doing enough. I have issues with both, but they do some good.

:nilly:Continue your ignorant rant if you wish, but there is plenty of information out there showing irresponsible pet ownership is responsible for overcrowded shelters and the large amounts of pets being euthanized.

PETA's stance on fishkeeping could not be more on-topic in this instance
The question was directed more to members asking how they feel towards feeding fish to other fish. Let's not bring PETA issues here anymore before everyone else feels slighted by the mere mention of it. We know what they don't want.

How ridiculous is it for people to say live feeders are okay because eating a burger is fine... since when is eating a burger not cruel to animals?

Feeding live feeders and eating a burger is very similar, in that both are cruel and unethical. Animals are kept in small, crowded enclosures their entire (short) lives and finally served up for dinner for humans or for your pet. They receive little, if any, medical attention and are fed cheap food that will maximize profit and are never able to live naturally.

In that way, yes, I do feel bad for feeders. I never have purchased one and will not in the future. If I did feed live I would do as some here are doing -- breeding and raising them myself in good conditions. My fish never get fed food that comes from commercial breeding operations, they get wild caught and veggies. I myself am a vegetarian (leading toward vegan who will *occasionally* eat seafood)... so I guess that makes our diets surprisingly similar.

I feel bad for them. I've kept fish for about 15 years and I used to give feeders to my oscars when I was a teenager. But when my mom saw those goldfish getting eaten like that, she told me I had to stop. We actually took all the goldfish in my goldfish tank out and released them into the pond at our temple.

It sucks how they die. It's not a quick death. I've seen clown knives sneak up from behind them and swallow them so that only their head is sticking out. And the whole time they are gasping for air. So I won't give feeders anymore. If your fish can eat pellets and frozen and you can get better growth/coloration with pellets and frozen than live, that's always better.

I do agree to each their own, but wanted to point out two wrongs don't make a right.

What You Can Do
Please don’t support the tropical fish trade by purchasing fish. If you enjoy watching fish, consider downloading one of the many colorful and realistic fish computer screensavers available on the Web.
lol, that's it I'm getting rid of all my tanks and replacing them with big screen LCD monitors. No more water changes and filter cleaning for me...well I might have to clean up some virues from those sites, but that's it.

I feel bad when it's not a quick kill but I love the hunt, it's called the food chain, there is nothing wrong with it. It's the reason fish have 100's-1000's of fry...in the wild the greater majority will be eaten e.g. they are breed for food in the wild. That's life, it sucks and only fools think everything is given an equal chance to survive. 150yrs ago is was common for people to have 6-10 kids because many didn't survive to adulthood. We've just have better medicine now.

hell no
