I have no interest in hybrids as I would like to hopefully show my fishes in the future.

My uncle was trying to give away his BPs for free on craigslist so I took them in to be used as target fishes for about week before trading them all in for $80 store credits:headbang2.

I think the ACA needs to do more to explain some of the nuances that differentiate hybrid vs. line bred, Discus and Angelfish, and more importantly the "why" on the long standing stance on Hybrids. Maybe it doesn't change anything. But the conversation has to happen.

I couldn't agree more.

I also think that there needs to be differentiation between INTENTIONAL hybrids and random ones.

Much like fancy livebearers and fancy bettas, fancy cichlids (flowerhorns, red texas, parrots) have been selectively bred to have the extreme, un-natural characteristics that they have. The market wants them, so the breeders produce them. While bad flowerhorns might be sold as "trimacs" or vice versa, it's hard to mistake a flowerhorn or parrot for anything else purebred.

Random - often unitentional - hybrids are another issue altogether, both in terms of posing a risk to being passed off as pure and in terms of having few redeeming characteristics. An LFS by me is selling some "sajica" that to the casual observer might seem like the real thing...but I'd bet that they're not pure. Whatever a-hole traded them in as "sajica" is doing his fellow hobbyists a dis-service. This is a whole different kind of problem than someone selling an AAA Super Red Flowerhorn for $300.

It would be great to have a moderated panel discussion on the pros and cons of hybrids at an upcoming ACA where SERIOUS flowerhorn folks (many, like discus folks are asian) are invited to participate. I'd bet that the two groups could learn a lot from each other, gain and understanding...and would find more similarities than differences.

By the way, I don't keep any hybrids - intentional or unintentional, although I can understand the appeal of some of the flowerhorns.

Yes.
As long as they are labeled what they are, I have nothing against hybrids. When sold as pure fish, than yes, I have an issue with them.

No, and I make a point of not shopping at stores that are irresponsible enough to stock them.
Hybrids bring so much money and growth to this hobby, overall they are a good thing to the fishkeeping world. the more people buy and sell these guys the easier it will become for you to get other fish. 99% of fish stores sell them. at least, every single one ive ever been to does. Glofish are hybreds and are #1 in sells behind parrots and there is nothing wrong with these 2 fish. they both live "happy" healthy lives in aquarium.

On the other hand i think a more important issue is conservation. Makeing sure ever person in the hobby is educated is a great place to start. Invasive fish and overfishing is a much bigger problem.

i haven't kept any hybrids yet besides rd/midas, i don't really like the unnatural look of flowerhorns, but something like a manaconda( festae x jag) does appeal to me

I don't have any hybrids right now, but I don't mind them. I love the hybrid cats. I'm not that big of fan of FHs, but that's because I don't like the huge head growth that they develop. Otherwise, I love the colors and patterns they produced.

What I do like about them is that it involves new people into the hobby...and that's good for everyone.

I agree with you Mo..what started me on fish keeping was the Blood Parrots and Flowerhorns..but at that time I didnt know they were Hybrids till I started researching and then joined this forum along with some other forums..so my vote is YES I have kept them before but NO to keeping them again in the future...
