I love hybrids.... imo why not try and create a more beautiful fish. No one seems to have a problem with people doing it with dogs

That's because dogs are all of the same species. A lot of hybridized fish are not.

I don't keep hybrids intentionally. Never have, never will.

Of course, some people keep dog/wolf crosses, which are hybrids.

The AKC even recently accepted "hybrid" dogs into its organization and competition in agility / performance events.

Wolves and dogs are considered to be the same species, Canis Lupus.

The original meaning of the term hybrid refers to creatures of different species being crossbred, such as a tiger and a lion = a liger.

It has become fashionable to refer to designer dogs like labradoodles, chugs, etc as hybrids but that would amount to the same as breeding a costa rican dovii to a nicuaraguan dovii. In this context, the term hybrid relates more to the plant world. It is not a representation of the hybrid fish in the context of the question Mo asked, at least not imo.

I'm just sayin' ;)

Dead on the money! Great post!

I guess it all depends on which taxonomists you believe as to whether crosses between dogs and wolves are species hybrids or sub-species crosses (see below from Wikipedia). Either way, domestic dogs...as well as dog/wolf crosses...are different from what is found in nature.

Matt

The subdivision of Canidae into "foxes" and "true dogs" may not be in accordance with the actual relations; also the taxonomic classification of several canines is disputed. Recent DNA analysis shows that Canini (dogs) and Vulpini (foxes) are valid clades. (See phylogeny below). Molecular data implies a North American origin of living Canidae and an African origin of wolf-like canines (Canis, Cuon, and Lycaon).[3]
Currently, the domestic dog is listed as a subspecies of Canis lupus, C. l. familiaris, and the Dingo (also considered a domestic dog) as C. l. dingo, provisionally a separate subspecies from C. l. familiaris; the Red Wolf, Eastern Canadian Wolf, and Indian Wolf are recognized as subspecies.[1] Many sources list the domestic dog as Canis familiaris, but others, including the Smithsonian Institution and the American Society of Mammalogists, more precisely list it as a subspecies of C. l. familiaris; the Red Wolf, Eastern Canadian Wolf, and Indian Wolf may or may not be separate species; the Dingo has been in the past variously classified as Canis dingo, Canis familiaris dingo and Canis lupus familiaris dingo.

As usual, everyone understands the question but it gets out of hand with all the Bull S***!:nilly:

No, I don't keep hybreds intentionaly. As an example, if my Jag & Mota breed I'd use the babbys as feeders. however to be complety honest I might grow one out to see what it looked like but would not let them into the hobby. What you do in your own house is up to you. I personaly don't like Flowerhorns or Parrots I think they look like freaks.

I voted no but it was somewhat of a confusing question. So to elaborate, Hybrids like parrots NO, NO, NO! I believe something like that is just the same as dying or tattooing fish, in that they are probably using some kind of hormone to force 2 species to breed to create that ugly deformity and is 100% wrong. But, if there was a newly found viable hybrid they found in the wild and could prove it was a hybrid of 2 species that naturally bread and could also prove that it can breed and survive in the wild I might keep something like that.

I keep a RD/midas hybrid I bought at petsmart. They called it a JD lol.

For the record I couldn't do parrot cichlids. Every time I see their messed up mouths I just want to put them out of their perceived misery.

LOL to them calling it a JD. But as a side note parrots always seem to be very happy-go-lucky to me, maybe that's just because the mouth deformity making them look like they're smiling to me, lol. I mean some people are born with comparable deformities and I don't want to put them out of their percieved misery...:grinno:
