Over-fishing, exotic species introductions, deleterious land-use practices, and pollution from various sources all contributed to the oxygen depletion and mass extinction of indigenous fishes in Lake Victoria.
At one time the lake contained over 400 endemic species of haplochromines whose extraordinary diversity and speed of evolution were inspiring to scientists. Today, a mere handful of species exists, threatened on one hand by a fearsome enemy - the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) - and on the other by the lake's changing conditions. Now, over 200 of the lake's endemic fish species are extinct and the other 200+ species are on the endangered species list.

Here are a few of the species that have become extinct in Lake Victoria:

Ctenochromis pectoralis
Haplochromis arcanus
Haplochromis artaxerxes
Haplochromis bartoni

umm no not at all, heh i was just looking for names, i need some specifics for a paper... thanks.....btw ur a psycho:banhim::headbang2

just curious and im sure it is somewhere on here but, what are your qualifications?? do u have a degree in something??...thanks for the help

I hold a bachelor of science degree in marine zoology and a masters in ichthyological taxonomy with a minor in paleoichthyology. But, to pay the bills, I'm an electromechanical engineer working on radiologically-sourced high-speed scanning control systems (and peripheral equipment).

Of course, none of that provides me with any type of "qualification" for what I post here. I'm just another hobbyist but, I've been at it longer than some with over 40 years in this delightful and oftentimes frustrating hobby of ours.
