Quarantine Tank
Since many of us attempt to break fish off of live I was curious if you think a fish will starve itself to death even with various types of non-live food offered to it?

What say you?

no... fish wont starve themselves for too long... they have basic survival skills which sooner or later forces them to accept food

Yes they will starve themselves to death. Though they do have basic survival skills, they may not recognize what you give them as food and there for starve to death.

But what if there are other fish including its own kind in the tank eating non-live?

I don't think they would, but my Chinese Perch was stubborn to the end. It only ate live it didn't eat for 3 weeks and the weather was getting cold, but since I heard they like it cooler, I didn't put a heater in the tank. The day I decided to put a heater in was the day I found it dead. I think it was a due to a mixture of temperature and starvation:(

Its hard to say, it could be a possibility. Sick fish may starve themselves to death so I would say it still may. Do you have a fish that is causing problems?

it depends upon the type of fish, there are fish that will refuse to take food and attempt to hunt for food even if there is little to hunt. these fish are rated as difficult and only for advance hobbyist. a example of a fish that will starve itself is a mandarin dragonet. some people get them to take food, but some fish are stubborn.
a cleaner wrasse is another example, with the difficulty of geting it to accept flake or frozen varying between species.

that being said i encourage everyone to move over to formulated or frozen food if at all possible. probably 99% of fish species in the hobby will switch

Some might while some might not depends on the fish IMO.

So lets get a list going...

Which fish will starve itself and which will not?

Example - Your thoughts on Widebars? Gars? Perch? Rays? ETC.
