Do you guys think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish when it comes to interacting with humans? Do you think they're poor hunter compared to other fish? I think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish. They are so skittish and will crash into everything in the tank. They are a fish with brute force and like to crash into decors. When it's time to eat it irritates me to see them find food so slow. For example, a cichlids will strike at the food the minute it hits water.

both of mine arent skittish at all, they are just are social as my dogs. i hand feed them, i even pet them at the top of the tank haha. They are really nice, and i also believe that it must be one of the smarter fish. I see mine stalk guppys, he aims just right. Although he does wait for the food along time. By the time my pacus are done eating he is just going to the top to look for pellets or somthing else.

know what I just remembered, we have to keep in mind that most of our bichirs are wild caught.

Thats the trade off with wild caught bichirs, they're nicer but also A LOT more skittish than farmed CB ones.

There are exceptions though like my little moke, she's as brave as they come, and is the cutest thing ever when she's eating pellets from the surface with all the other younger bichirs in my tank.

mine glide gracefully around the tank and start looking for food as soon as i walk up to the tank... not exactly a puppydog/betta type relationship but they are FAR from the dumbest fish ive ever kept...

Q.Do you guys think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish when it comes to interacting with humans?
A.I have a senegal that likes to sit on my open palm in her tank
Q. Do you think they're poor hunter compared to other fish
A.Bichirs are scent hunters while many other spaeice are sight hunters
Q.I think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish.
A.As a species they have survived over 100 million years lets see humans top that
Q.When it's time to eat it irritates me to see them find food so slow. For example, a cichlids will strike at the food the minute it hits water.
A.Its the difference between sight and scent hunters

i think mine may be a bit too clever for their own good if im honest with u lol
my delhezi was a brilliant hunter...i always just happened to 'lose' fish and my delhezi would always hide his head if he had been naughty but u could see his stomach was a significant size bigger than it was before lol.
mine rnt skittish just active, and thats what makes them my babies that i love so much and would even give up my flowerhorn for....dont tell her i said that!

It's all a matter of preference.

As for the boring feeding, as Anne pointed out bichirs hunt by scent. I don't always like a fish eating in 2 seconds. I really enjoy throwing in a handful pellets and watching all the bichirs go to the places they know the food usually lands and slowly sniffing around until they find it.

On interaction, when I go near my tanks, my senegals, albinos and del sart swimming around at the top waiting for me to see what I might have.

I also find bichirs peaceful to watch.

I think the more natural the aquascaping is the more natural and thus interesting the are.
