Q.Do you guys think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish when it comes to interacting with humans?
A.I have a senegal that likes to sit on my open palm in her tank
Q. Do you think they're poor hunter compared to other fish
A.Bichirs are scent hunters while many other spaeice are sight hunters
Q.I think bichirs are one of the dumbest fish.
A.As a species they have survived over 100 million years lets see humans top that
Q.When it's time to eat it irritates me to see them find food so slow. For example, a cichlids will strike at the food the minute it hits water.
A.Its the difference between sight and scent hunters

i totally agree.
i dont think a bichir is dumb just because it does not interact with humans like any cichlid.
i love bichirs,and always will.
but i love them for the way they are.
the way they just sit around and stare into nothingness.

My bichir is awesome. He is better than my male jd. He will follow my finger and swims around freely with lights on all the time. He is in a tank by himself, that may be why.

Thank you for all that have replied. Please do not get offended and my intend of this thread was not to be offensive. I just wanted to get a general feeling or honest opinion how bichir owners feel toward their bichir being skittish and slow hunters.

I was just frustrated cuz my bichirs were really skittish and crashed into the new decors I just set up. They made a really big mess and scratching my acrylic tank. Today I went to check on the decors and it seem they have really settled down. They have fully acclimated to their new environment and are enjoying the hiding spots the new decors provided.

you should try a big pbass newly introduced...

i think you got your birchirs off the short bus!! yours dont sound anything like mine! the 3 i have have totally different personalities!!

I just picked up my first Bichir on friday, a 3.5" Endli and he's far from skiddish. He doesnt swim to the surface alot but he glides around the tank alot feverishly moving his pectoral fins. My qt tank is on the bottom rack (10g) and my dogs lay right next to the tank and he comes to the front and lays with my dogs.:grinno: As for feeding he has no problem with finding and eating tilapia and shrimp pieces that hit the bottom of the tank even when they wont fit in his mouth. Ive only had him for a few days but already thinking about adding to my collection, very interesting fish imo.

imagine if bichirs are sight hunters, and with their appetite it will be very catastrophic!!! they are just playing their part and are good at what they do.

food for thought, ask someone to scatter food in your home and find it using your nose and compare the result with your bichir, LOL

peace out!!!

Agree, I've kept bichirs a long time and all of them have had various personalities. As far as dumb, no way. Like Blondie said lived over 100 million yrs.

you obviously haven't kept bichirs for long. My 4 inch senegal is like an assasin! he was bought as a gift by my wife so he had to spend time in my community tank. in less than 6 weeks, he managed to eat about 4 platies, a danio, and 2 chinese algae eaters. not to mention if i put a live ghost shrimp in he tank, its gone in 15 minutes.
