well i have seen a small baby sofe shell turtle at my pet store and i want to put it with my cichlids i have seen it been pulled off just not with these fish yet i have a 4 in jack a 3 in red devil and a 4 in textas do you think it would work ok and why or why not

No, it would not work. Softshell turtles have sharp jaws, long necks, and short tempers. They will mutilate your fish, even ones too big for them to eat whole. Also, softshells are very active turtles and need a big tank or pond with a basking area. If you just toss one into an ordinary aquarium it will not do well.

Softshells don't bask, and generally don't haul out. They'll be fine not having a dock at their disposal. Fish wise, I've kept them in community tanks without problems. And then one day out of the blue, they'll decide they hate one particular fish. It'll be fish guts everywhere.

The problem I had was that they are slow eaters. The fish will over eat while the turtle starves.

What kind of softshells were you keeping? My spiny was a dedicated basker. I also often see wild spiny softshells basking.

Spiny's and Florida's. I also have mud turtles and had a map. Maybe my spiny's are just shy;they don't bask. My other turtles do. My Florida didn't and the wild ones here rarely do. I use to feed a bunch of wild Floridas at a pond under a board walk. The cooters would haul out and bask but the softies never did.

Interesting. Maybe it's just a temperature function; the water is cooler up here for most of the year, and I kept my softshell tank at room temp, more or less.

I keep 1 in my 300g community. I bought 2 babies 2" one got a skin infection and died but the other one is doing great. Never bothers anyone no fish bothers him. He's about 4" now. He eats just about everything except clams. He likes to dig into the gravel with just his head sticking out. I gave him a platform but I never seen him use it. He's fun to watch sometimes he chases fish for the food. When I feed cut shrimp he likes to hog all the pieces under a piece of driftwood and if a fish grabs a piece he will chase him and grab it back! LOL

i do not reccomend it at all. some softies will do fine and others just have quite the cip on the shoulder. and you can't tell right away, one day they'll just snap. if youre gonna do this don't put anything in the tank youre not willing to lose!!!

One thing to remenbar is this: dont put a baby softshell turtle in a tank full of big established fish or else the turtle may very well become their prey. If your gonna try it get a half grown one or raise a litle one in a tank apart for several mouths.
