im going to tell you the same thing i type on every pacu thread. and please dont take this the wrong way

that 7" pacu you have right now, will be pushing 18-20" in the next few months. pacu will hit a growth spurt around 7-8" or so, and balloon to all hell and wont stop until around the foot and a half mark. trust me on this one, ive raised 4 pacu from the size of a quarter to 20" and over, and i still have two of them. one of them is starting to grow again noticebly fast, so my 7 ft 26" wide tank is shrinking by the day. i pray this guy will make it the next few months until i move into my new house and car finally dig him a pond.

your 180 seems large now, but it will not soon enough. unless you can provide a larger tank when the time comes for your pacu, its time to start looking NOW to get rid of it. properly cared for, they should reach 2 feet in around 2 years or less. and will continue to still grow and grow and grow.

on the other hand, if your not going to get rid of it, and your tank is larger than what its in now, take him. i know for whatever reason alot of people on the net dont want to take other peoples advice on giving away a fish, so at the very least put him in a bigger tank. and in a year when you have a 2 foot monster on your hands, eating 2lbs+ of pellets a week by himself, dont forget this thread :D

I have a 210 gallon and a 300 gallon tank. I won't keep pacu, I don't feel like my tanks are large enough to house them properly. On top of that they create so much waste that I could never keep up with the maintenance that they would require once they get bigger and start eating non-stop.

No, don't do it unless you plan on a bigger tank. :)

I specifically remember someone on this forum who got a Pacu and ignored everyone's pleas for him to give it back, and a couple months later he was back on here trying to figure out who to sell it to because it had gotten too big.

NO!

What kind of filtration do you have? Are you willing to do two or three 40% water changes a week?

IMO pacu should be banned from being sold in any lfs across the world. They are probably the most popular mistreated fish of all. Well maybe behind gold fish but those are food.:grinno:

yeah hes in a 55 right now, a lfs i know will take him they have quite the collection of huge pacu's.

im running an fx5 and a 700 gph w/d on the 180.

hes ok for now in the 55, hes just in the w/ a pleco. but when he gets a little bigger hes going to the lfs

i was just thinking ill keep in for a month or two in my 180, but since every one is so dead agants it ill just pass on the offer,

i do a 50- 60% q week i dont even want to think about doing more then that

I agree they should be banned! My neighbor was going to flush all the fish in his 15 gallon tank when he moved. Didn't see the cute little silver fish hiding behind a rock when I agreed to take them all. That red bellied pacu quickly outgrew my 100gal and then a 260gal. I ended up building him a 1500 gallon outdoor pond. He is now almost 3 feet long and I'm going to have to build a bigger pond.
