doctors in california keep lots of secrets about cancer....

It would never happen.
1st, many fish eat fish. for these it takes 4lbs of fish (in the form of food) to produce 1lb of farmed fish.
2nd, overstocking results in vast amounts of waste that pollute surrounding ecosystems.
3rd, overstocking results in the spread of disease requiring the use of antibiotics and other meds. the average farmed fish contains more antibiotics than any other farmed animal (cows, chickens, pigs, etc.)
4th, these fish inadvertently escape back into the wild, interbreeding with and displacing local, wild fish populations. Thus, fish with inferior genes are replacing wild fish with superior genes.
5th, these are only a few of many problems with aquaculture.
This is why so many fishkeepers prefer to stock their tanks with wild or F1 fish?
And how many meds, and even foods, say "not for human consumption" or "known by the State of California to cause cancer"? Imagine the effect of these substances after generations of inbreeding unhealthy, poorly kept fish.
Something to think about next time you buy or eat farmed fish.
Now pass the tartar sauce.
i kinda think this thread is more about fish in the aquarium hobby not fish farming for food.

its possible that it can happen one day but noy catching fish from the wild will just give us ugly fish new genes are needed so not catching new fish fromthe wild is not really that realistic

most but not all. like the fish that won't breed in captive environments. well, you could square off a part of the amazon basin and just call it "aquaculture zone".

also. one thing that sucks balls deep about aquaculture is low quality and/or incested fish. so many of those oscars and other fish look disgusting at LFS cause of this.

true :WHOA:

I don't think it will ever happen. There are fish we have yet to discover deep in the oceans. We are so far off from even getting there that being able to catch, keep in captivity let alone breed does not seem realistic.

that's the point sir, we can't even find one because they are so adopted to the pressures of the deep ocean, now how can you mimic the pressure in those depths. so much for the aquaculture i guess.
