What is it about these socks that are better? The FSI socks that I use have an integrated plastic flange at the top that prevents any water from bypassing the sock. It also has two integrated handles that make it easy to extract the dirty sock from the 30" cylinder.
I use 4 socks on a 540 gallon tank. I change them out every 3-4 weeks. I just use a spray nozzle in the driveway to clean mine. No prime, no bleach. I've run 'em through the washing machine a few times, too. They come out a little bit cleaner with the spray nozzle on the hose.
I use a welded felt sock, 25 micron, and they are about a year old now. I bought 8 and new one's get about a week, the older one's clog after 5 days now. I haven't rotated them evenly, I just grab a clean one a toss it on so... I spray mine out with the garden hose pressure nozzle and then throw them in the washing machine inside out with a load of towels.
I like running the 25 micron sock because it filters out any free floating algae and the water sparkles..
My tank had shubunkin, dace, dojos, bristlenose plecos, and snails. Cleanest goldfish tank ever...
They are good for a couple years. I use 5 socks in the fish room. I change them every 2-3 weeks. Throw in the washing machine with a little bleach. After first run turn inside out and run again. Then turn right side out for a third run. I have about 20 socks and haven't thrown any out yet.
