I'm not much of a tuner guy yet but I'd guess the term DSM is similar to small block chevy - covers a lot of parts that can be interchangable. Dodge, Plymouth, or Mitsubishi once the car is just a shell and a different engine/drivetrain from something else is installed it's easier to sum it up as a DSM then explain what it actually is.
I cant remember if it was one of the fast and furious movies or need for speed video games but I remember reading something somewhere about the introduction to street racing and it involved an old DSM car and them tricking a guy out of a bunch of money by sandbagging the first race then offering a 10 car lead and taking that race too (and all the loot). Mite have to try to dig that up.....
Mitsubishi 3000s are what really grabbed my interest in boost. After doing a PDI on a 2003 Srt 4 neon and giggling like a school girl for a week I knew I'd be revisiting this crazy sickness later in life.....
Fast forward through a few hobbies and about a decade later and I finally got my hands on a srt4 to play with. The way a car pulls at 15 pounds of boost is pretty neat. Can't wait to see what it feels like on the way to doubling it..... lol Poor lil neon's still butt hurt about my coworker's srt8 mopping the floor with it. Who would have thought the neon would be the one with the traction problem?
