Yes that extra few inches helps its also more water. 55 gal more water. The more water the more room you have for fish.
I think it comes down to what kind of fish you want to keep and how many? A 125 gal is good for most good size fish. So deside what you want to keep and then that will help you make up your mind. but 55 gal is a lot of extra water.

Not really. I could have a tank that measured 48 long X 18 deep X 24 high. (90 gallons) A tank with less gallons of water but could house more fish would be 60 long X 24 deep X 12 high. (75 gallons).
The footprint of the larger tank is only 6 squre feet vs. 10 square feet for the smaller (gallon), so you 66% more footprint for territories. Not to mention a larger surface area for oxygen exchange.
You can always do more water changes on a smaller tank or add more filtration, but you can't do anything to increase the footprint you start with.
Hence why I'd take a 40 breeder over a standard 55 any day.
Good point Modest Man and I totally agree.I have 2 40 breeders, could have purchased 55s cheaper but like the footprint of the 40s better!
Agree about the square foot things. hence why the title isn't about gallon difference. even though the gallon difference does help keep water quality better when talking with big dirty cichlids.
As someone who owns a 180, and knows someone who owns a 125 (my brother), the 180 is only slightly bigger.
Footprint does mean a lot. For example, my brothers 125 looks a lot bigger than my 100 because his 125 is a foot longer.
I would go for a 300 long (8 feet). That would be awesome!

I agree with ModestMan, wide tanks are the way to go. I would never own a tank that is taller than it is wide, I just don't like the lack of depth and for the vast majority of fish kept in the hobby width and length are far more important.
I didn't think there would be much of a difference between a 6x2x2' 180 and a 6'x18"x27" 150g tank. I was wrong when I sold my 180 and tried the same stock in the 150, it didn't even come close. I had to reduce the stock to less then half what it was in the 180.
