Ok, im sure every fisherman has had a line snap in his/her day and time. I was just small mouth fishing, and a larger one broke the line on the rod i was borrowing after I caught four others. But then it got me thinking, will that fish now die with a lure in his mouth?

It all depends on where the hook is lodged in the fish. If it is obstructing the fish from eating then yes it couldbe very bad. I mainly fish freshwater but I heard that some saltwater hooks are made to rust away very quickly for this reason.

Someone did an experiment to see how long it took for the hooks to rust away.It was surprisingly fast, the lure will probably fall off in a short time.

usually the hook falls out after the tissuse around it dies.

Hooks don't just fall out. If the fish is hooked poorly, there is a good chance the fish can shake it loose. A single hook is not likely to be life threatening to the fish unless lodged in a place where it will prevent the fish from swallowing, damage its sight, or cause infection.

If the lure is a treble hook, and the fish is hooked well and in multiple sites, chances are the fish will die. Most freshwater lures are made with hooks that are stainless steel, and they won't rust off.

This is why barbless hooks are good for fish. The hooks are MUCH more likely to fall out on their own should your line snap.

The MN fishing regulations state that if a fish is too deeply hooked to remove it, cut the line and leave it. The fishes digestive acids will erode the hook over time. I'm not sure I buy that.
