Does a lure come out of a fish by itself?

thanks for the info. i guess there is not much you can do about it and is bound to happen every once and awhile, but it is good to know what is the best interest of the fish.

I deep hooked a beautiful pumpkinseed years ago, took him home and put him in my tank. The hook disappeared within 7 days. I think the stomach acid did get it, because I never found it among my gravel.

Someone did an experiment to see how long it took for the hooks to rust away.It was surprisingly fast,the lure will probably fall off in a short time.

they rust apart the fastest
the silver colored ones didnt rust at all

The MN fishing regulations state that if a fish is too deeply hooked to remove it, cut the line and leave it. The fishes digestive acids will erode the hook over time. I'm not sure I buy that.

Kinda unrelated...not sure if its a bad unhook job or a turtle attack...at the local lake, we get alot of badly bitten by turtles Catfish, Sunfish, etc but I once landed a very big Pumpkinseed with no lower jaw. Not bloody, and was able to outcompete about 30 other Sunfish frenzied around my bait. Not bad. Fish can cope with injuries surprisingly well.
My Dad once caught a 6 inch Cocktail Bluefish that had bite marks on the gill, face, and midsection, and, examining the halfmoon bite's position, it was obvious that the fish was attacked head first, swallowed down to the tail, and escaped.
Yet he was OK enuf to hit a bottom bait. And to fight the whole way up!
