Does a sponge filter actually works? I know it works as a place where bacteria can colonize but the question is, does it really work for mechanical filtration?
I have a couple of sponge filters in my tank that has been set up for two weeks. I observed them this afternoon that it doesn't do any type of mechanical filtration at all. I observed particulate matter in my tank. These particulate matter almost touches the sponge itself and there seems to be no suction at all. The "dust" basically continues to float away.
There are also fish poop that are resting on top of the sponge itself. I say rest because if the sponge was moved, the poop moves with it or drops to the tank from the top of the filter.
Of maybe I set it up wrong? The sponge filter is a simple device and the only instruction is connect the air tube to it. Nothing more nothing less.
Am I doing anything wrong or is it just the way its suppose to be? Lots of air and a place for bacteria to thrive coupled with no mechanical filtration at all?
