Does a sponge filter actually works? I know it works as a place where bacteria can colonize but the question is, does it really work for mechanical filtration?

I have a couple of sponge filters in my tank that has been set up for two weeks. I observed them this afternoon that it doesn't do any type of mechanical filtration at all. I observed particulate matter in my tank. These particulate matter almost touches the sponge itself and there seems to be no suction at all. The "dust" basically continues to float away.

There are also fish poop that are resting on top of the sponge itself. I say rest because if the sponge was moved, the poop moves with it or drops to the tank from the top of the filter.

Of maybe I set it up wrong? The sponge filter is a simple device and the only instruction is connect the air tube to it. Nothing more nothing less.

Am I doing anything wrong or is it just the way its suppose to be? Lots of air and a place for bacteria to thrive coupled with no mechanical filtration at all?

They are for bio. Your chemical is controlled by water changes if sponges are the only filters you run....

sponge filters aren't the best mechanical filration, they are great biological filtration however. It is possible to run a large tank (100+ gallons) off of just sponge filters. you won't have crystal clear water, but it should take care of the ammonia and nitrite which is the major concern with filtration.

Really i wouldn't run a tank over 50 gallons without a sponge filter for just a little bit extra bio filtration.

Do they make any that aren't noisy? I like them for the cost effectiveness and efficiency, but that noise drives me nuts.

The theory is that if you never clean your sponge it will start removing nitrate because it will get clogged so much that oxygen can't get in it and those aneobic bacteria will consume nitrate.

:screwy: WTH are you talking about?

hydro sponges work great and do a lil mechanical as well but they are more bio...
