Thanks for finding the article, Bderick. You'er a top notch keeper in my book. Whether you believe what the article says or not, it's always good to share the info and knowledge with other hobbyists so they can be more informed and form a more educated opinion of their own.

The article was profound...yes...I can see why it catches your attention..It does not mention the hell your fish would go through waiting for the rotten filter to start to show benefits. IF it even works at all....

This is REALLY getting out of hand....LOL

YES sponge filters...most notably the hydro line....do move conciderable amounts of water and CAN keep a tank clean on thier own...I've seen it dozens of times and have done it. Concider this...the twin lift tubes of an UGF move more than enough water to pull debris to the bottom of the tank and the hydro lift tubes are exactly the same...

First off you need a good air pump or as has already been suggested...a powerhead. If your using an air driven sponge filter then ignore the instructions and drive it with a small round air stone or limewood block placed as low in the assembly as possible. This will SUBSTANTUALLY increase lift and so increase the 'suction' of the filter. I don't like using them with just the course bubbles from the built in nozzle.

Powerhead driven sponge filters are even more efficiant and quiet however I don't generally use them because it increases maintaince and having the sponge filters air driven allows them to be driven with a battery powered air pump in an emergancy.

A light rinse in used tank water once a month is all the maintance a sponge filter usually needs to keep a breeding or fry tank sparking clean...in fact the fry quickly learn that the food particles are trapped by the sponge and hang out there most of time looking for a snack.

Don't make the mistake of equating low tech with ineffective...

Is it really put of hand??? LOL

Ok. So the sponge filter is not good for mechanical filtration but I expected a little bit of suction but in my case there is nothing. Although it is true that when the sponge filter is squeezed, gunk does come out. I guess it filters the particles not seen by the eyes compared to the free floaters that annoy the hell out of any fish keeper.

I use a sponge and it works great. Especially on a new tank that needs to be accliimated! All I do is hook it up to a power head but it works wonder for my Bio and I have done this for years!
