I'm pretty new to this stuff and was wondering why a basic all-in-one unit for filtration and heating doesn't exist at the small tank level. It would seem more convenient for first timers and relatively easy to implement.

I realize people use sumps or canister filters which can do everything at the larger scale, so what's limiting a smalled HOB unit from having temperature control built into it? What am i missing, or do these things exist and i haven't found them yet?

thanks in advance

it would be a pretty expensive filter if it was integrated. especially at such a small level. Even on larger tanks, the heaters you find in the sump are purchased separately from the sump so we all have the same problem you're experiencing.

I think I have seen filter units that have an option to put in a heater but have never used one myself. I think the first fish tank I had came with a filter like that but I just used the regular heaters that stick on the glass. *shrug* good luck!

It wouldn't make sense because heaters and filters fail at different rates. If your heater failed in the combo, then you have to replace both (and pay for both) rather than just replacing the heater. Ditto for the filter. I find heaters fail every 6 months or so, whereas filters last a few years.

Rena and Tetra both have some more-expensive HOB filters that feature either an internal heater (Tetra) or a heater that doubles as an intake (Rena).

yeah something like this. this heater works together with this filter
