Does anybody have autisium??? Conversation thread...

there are multiple cases in my family along with many other things but i notice that people with autism are extremly smart and even smarter in what they like to do

I don't really know or understand all the details of autism. I work with kids at church in a camping program similar to boy scouts. 2 of the boys have moderate levels of autism. One of them has been in the progam for over a year now & I have seen how it has helped him learn to communincate better with kids his age. They mostly control it with proper diet & on occasion medication. There are certain things he can't eat or it makes it worse. He knows what they are & is always checking the lables on snacks & stuff to make sure they won't affect him.
He has been on several campouts with the group & done very well working with the other kids, although he still seems to communicate better with the adults or perhaps it's just a preference.
Some of the things that seem to give him difficulty are seeing steps in a process like setting up a tent or building a pinewood derby car. You have to give him one step at a time the first few times he does something, after that he never forgets it & will remind others of the proper steps. He truly has a fantastic mind.
Other than that making sure I look him in they eye & give him specific direction, I don't treat him any different than the other kids.
The other one is in a different aage group, so i don't work directly with him, so I'm not sure how he does.

I know a kid in my shop who has Asperger's Autism. I guess it's social disorder in which he can't communicate properly with people. Like he tries to fit in and ends up saying something that offends people because he doesn't know any better. Also he takes things very literal like if you said go jump off a bridge he would probably think you are serious. It's kind of akward being around him but it's ok he says things that I don't like but I say to myself he can't help himself so let it be.

I guess there are multiple variants of Autism. The only thing is people say Austistic kids are very smart but this kid is dumb as a rock though. Not to be mean but he can't get any tests correct and can't answer Q's when teachers ask him. Maybe his Autism variant affects mental capablities? Anybody know?

I'm a nursing student and I just finished a psych rotation where I worked with some kids that had autism range disorders. I just want to say that I think it's great that your open and accepting about your illness. I hope you accomplish all the things that you want in life. Best of luck.

I think the fish hobby helps out alot of us through certain things in life. I think it's an excape from everyday life. Right now, my tank is empty and I cant stop staring at it.

This kid at my girlfriends high school is autistic. He is basically a genius and is #1 in his class by far. Another kid at my school was in the special needs class and everyone thought he was like severely retarded, turns out he is autistic and extremely smart. He could read a newspaper article and remember it and tell you everything it said.

i dont have autism, but i have depression, anxiety and ADD (not ADHD), i have also noticed that i have symptoms that are associated to OCD and autism. awhile back i read in a book on ADD that people that have it tend to be more interested in pets that are out of the ordinary and im certainly no exception. i take medication for my anxiety and my ADD and it helps alot, before i started taking my current dosage i was extremely nervous and struggled in school, but now im doing fine:)

I describe myself as being "autistic-like" since I had some strokes. It damaged the sensory input area in my brain and I am easily overwhelmed by what goes on around me. When I work on a project it becomes my sole focus and I become oblivious to my surroundings. When in that state I am easily startled so severely that I can go into seizures. I also can have seizures for other reasons but that is the one area I work on the most right now - being aware of my surroundings. Making choices really throws me as well. If I can answer "yes" or "no" I do well but don't ask me to make a decision. I now live in a very ordered life and everything gets done at a certain time. If I do them out of sequence I don't remember if I did them or not.

I am high-functioning and most people can't really tell other than I may seem a bit quirky. Lol, if they only knew. Medications help me to stay where I can control myself but it is still a lot of work. Fish are my outlet and my distraction from myself.

I have Depression but not Autism....my sister has some sort of OCD where she has to make sure her finger tips touch EVERYTHING before leaving it alone...like a lightswitch...she also has to read everything to the end if she so much as glimpses some writing. It must be frustrating.....but like me with the depression i found it's so hard to get through a single day without feeling the world is on your shoulders and you feel like....'girl,just pull yourself together!' but you can't cos it's a chemical imbalance see. I'm on medication for it and it has helped a great deal but then so does having a very patient partner and, like others have said, having a hobby like the fish keeping is just so helpful too. People are like...what have you been doing today and i'm like....'been watching the fish mostly' and they're like....'okaaaay?' ...but i guess unless you're a fish keeper like us peeps then nobody understands the passion and the pleasure we get out of the guys!
I have every respect for those peeps who are a little unfortunate like us because having something go wrong in yourself, makes you empathise a little more with other sufferers.
The fish have really helped and i would say to anyone basically who is suffering from a disorder, to just carry on with the fish, man, cos they're so therapeutic plus friendly critters too....
Nuff said..
