I hope that everybody on this thread that suffers from symptoms of mental illness already does or will consider seeking healthcare. There are a lot of things we can do for mental illness now. The drugs are getting better, and people have a better understanding of the illnesses people are suffering with. Have you ever heard of NAMI?

http://www.nami.org/

they do great work. If some of you are in recovery you should look into working with NAMI. They put a positive face on mental illness, and work to dispel the stigmas associated with psychiatric illness.

I was wondering if any forum members have autisum? And how does it affect you.

I have autisum, im like to have a routine and if things change i get upset. I worry about the little things, and life. I also have depression, when my father was in hospitial and nearly died, i was extremely depressed and spent a lot of time in my self. I was much more withdrawn and did feel genuinley suicidal.

Forum members helped me threw it especially LIZ and Dawn (PFK)

This is not a thread for bullying.

Tell us about yourself!

Bruce, it was very courageous and honest of you to reveal yourself in this manner. Kudos to you! I also think anybody would be stressed and depressed if their father was in that status.

I actually have several autistic students come visit my classroom everyday. I have done lots of lessons and discussions with my "regular" students about them. They are amazing children and always make me smile and appreciate life to its fullest!

im the total opposite....
no schedule, very messy, dont care much about anything. :D
but very into any hobby i take up.

my mum thinks that my big bother suffered from autism when he was a small child..

I believe that everyone is on the autistic scale. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I was in a graphic design class and became friends with a person who had autism. He was high on the autistic scale and constantly cursed at people and himself, but he would always apologize afterward. When he was working on art however he created some of the best works I have ever seen. I enjoyed working with him and being his friend. You just have to be thankful to have individual and special people in your life.

Bruce, I think its brave for you to open up to the community. It is something that you could have kept to yourself, but I think being open about things also opens new doors and possibilities.

Well yes i do have a few issues and may i add Red Devil is very helpful always talk to her :headbang2 i havent had the best child hood.
My mind brian i guess is very munted >_> some parts of brian have just been shut down or as doctor said dormant and i was depressed from being at school.
I barely made it through but somehow i am still alive after all these years meh i pull through **** happens ay and Liz did help allot in the last few months.

I Had allot of mental issues as a child never draeming good just dreaming evil and fear even some of my feelings are dormant you get the idea i don't really want to get into depth about how munted i am.
I thought i would say casue if bruce can come out and say something i will add to this thread and come out but thats all i want to say don't waht to make a page of my sickness.

You have made huge steps since i have known you... don't look back so much...look ahead... and Bruce you have changed and grown so much... i find you totally amazing... your both very capable and very endearing ...and should feel proud..

I went through most of my elementary and high school with a guy that had autism. When we were young, we all thought he just suffered from some form of mental retardation, but he always took normal classes, but normally had an adviser to help him with tasks. I later found out he just had pretty severe autism. He could do normal school work, he just didn't do well in social situations and was overwhelmed by large groups and had random outbursts. His passion was sports statistics. He always had stacks of sports almanacs with him and would rattle of players and their stats (sometimes in an echoing announcer voice ,it was awesome)

I also have a cousin with Down's syndrome that has pretty severe autistic tendencies. He likes doing very repetitive tasks, like last summer at our family reunion we were at a playground for a few hours and he climbed up and slid down a slide the entire time. His mother also says that one of his favorite things to do around the house is fold his clothes over and over again, but since he's still very young, he basically makes a mess of them. He's a hand-full for his mother as he is #3 of 4 kids.
