these things are so cool and the pet store has some and they are a green color. and there nose is pointy (i don't know there real name because stores often miss label thing) i just wanted to know what they were like and what they needed.

Get one that's feeding well on baby rats, lest you get stuck catching toads for it.

They are WONDERFUL animals! I have a big female western. They are the cutest, most expressive snake I've ever owned.

Don't buy from a crappy pet store. Try extremehogs.com or the classifieds at market.kingsnake.com. They are very popular at expos, so look for them if one is near you. Whatever you do, get a juvenile CB western.

:nilly:neat-o i want a snake so bad but parents hate them sigh i guess i'll just have to wait till collage or till im 16 lol not far off tho:naughty:

Tell your parents theres nothing to be afraid of. Tell them they are cheap, small, silent, and harmless. They require less work and are less dangerous than other popular pets. And people think dogs are harmless... Haha, anyway, worked for me! Now they don't even need convincing. As long as we can afford it, dad goes nuts when I get new herps! :D

Things really take off when you move out of your parents' house. By the middle of November, my snake collection will have more than doubled from what it was a year ago. Of course, now I've got a wife and I've had to do some convincing with her....

Hognosed snakes? Their natural behavior is to roll over and play (and, more importantly to the prospective keeper - SMELL) quite dead when disturbed. Failing these measures as a deterrent, they can inflict a bite including a weak venom that includes an anticoagulant from their little rear fangs. It won't really hurt you, but you'll probably have to keep a bandaid on it for at least a week...

I'd pass unless you find examples that eat convenient foods and have been regularly handled since shortly after hatching.

Hognoses arent dangerous or sensitive in the least. They rival corns in handleablity.

Bites are often discribed like a beesting and they bleed for hours, but with little pain, only numbness. You've gotta be really stupid to get bit by one.

They have a whole barrage of defenses. First, they hiss like a pine snake, VERY audibly. If that doesnt work, they get into a defensive pose and flatten their bodies like a cobra , still hissing. They might do a few huffs and puffs with some closed strikes. If you pick them up like this, they wont hesitate to spray you with poop and musk. Then comes the famous playing possum. They seem to think you have to be upside down to be dead, because if you flip them over they go back! Of course, if they can simply run into a hole, you won't see any of this.

They are a cinch to feed if you get a CB western. Most breeders nowadays get EASTERNS to eat unscented mice as their first meal. This is 2007, not 1960.

Ahh the 60s...the glory days of herpetoculture, when everyone could take a bong hit, pick up a boa, and head out to the protest.

Where did you hear about most breeders getting easterns to eat unscented mice as their first meal? And what does the date have to do with it anyway? Snakes don't know the year...if breeders couldn't get CB easterns to eat unscented mice in 1960, why should it be any easier today?
...curious.
