Does anyone else take advantage of their LFS? lol

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Think about this.....it dosent matter what a fish is labeled. If the LFS sold a $15 fish for $5....they must have only paid $2 to put that fish in the store. An owner isnt going to list a fish for less than they paid for it. So im sure the owner made the money he wanted. You got a great deal and probably saved the fishes life.

For all of you who think the OP is in the wrong, you must have a small understanding of how many LFS sell over priced fish that they know will not last in the overpriced 10gal they are selling the person. I agree that not all stores are like this but......i would bet my whole stock that the majority of LFS owners willingly sell overpriced equipment and fish to unsuspecting people.

If you were buying a house for a supper cheep price and the seller didnt know....i dont think anyone who has posted on this thread would tell the seller to raise the price.

I agree, really surprised that so many people spoke against this guy being able to get a deal on fish.

i try to help my LFS...if i see something mislabeled I tell them...small business' have a hard enough time without being takin advantage of....you say they should hire knowledgable people but everyone has to start somewhere.

You're right. Everyone does have to start somewhere. Starting at this store takes you from "somewhere" and leaves you at the same place. Unless the person goes home and spends their free time looking up aquaria related things they wouldn't learn a thing. I didn't say they should hire knowledgeable people either, but it would be nice.

I don't feel particularly bad for them. They overcharge by a good 100% over regular pet store retail prices on everything in the store. Their margin of profit on any sale makes up for their mislabelling, and horrendous survival rates. I live in a large town/small city and they have cornered the local market (the only store that sells pets) unless you drive into the nearby large city. If they were struggling to exist and took better care of their animals I might have felt some sympathy. Any pet store that treats their animals that poorly shouldn't bother selling pets at all, as far as I'm concerned.

i should have disclosed that my friend owns/runs the fish store so im more inclined to help out....i see your point...if they arent trying to take care of things why bother helping them...they may be in it for the money not the enjoyment of the hobby

i have my choice of lfs's and there is only one i do this to. it is a branch of walmart and the care takers don't know jack with their fish. they even sell red and pink dyed silver arowana for $10 and label them strawberry arowana. i jipped them once when i saw a 4" clown loach in the goldfish/feeder fish tank by himself. i got him for $0.12 lol. i would never do this unless they deserved it.

Guess I'm lucky to have been hooked up with a good LFS from the get-go. Small family-owned joint in Forest Lake, MN. Its almost an hour from home, but with 12 shelves of 40 breeders and larger stacked 4 or 5 high (and that's just the fresh water selection) its worth the drive just to look. There's a fire eel that's been there at least since February and I love stopping in to say hi to him! And there was a gorgeous female percula clown for the longest time that was HUGE and if she and Dolly wouldn't have killed each other, she would have been mine!

They are importers too so they get good deals on all their stock and most of the employees are extremely knowledgeable in aquaria. They specialize in fish and it shows!

thanks. i would never do something like this though to a small lfs or family or good one. but this one is owned by walmart they also sell kittens and puppies for impulse buy and they drug them with this sleepy stuff so people, including children, can handle them unsupervised. i hope they go out of business. if they can't tell a clown loach from a goldfish then they deserve to practically give it away.

If something is mislabeled and or they don't know what they have then yes I will jump on that deal, I don't outright steal anything though

Walmarts (that I have seen) that have a fish section honestly do not have 'a fish guy', they just tell one of the stockers to throw some food in there every now and again. I don't think you should be about to buy pets at a grocery store. Kinda like having pet stores in the mall... 'wanna go buy some new shoes and a puppy mill puppy to match'? I used to work for the same chain up north and that mall shop would talk horrible about us and give customers terrible advice. They'd sell clown knifes for fish bowls, no guarantee.

Sorry for drifting the topic, but I don't care to be nice to stores like that, if I see a mislabeled fish he's all mine. Otherwise I'd probably say something.
