this is great...he has been the perfect little fish all day! just chilling at the top of the water gulping air like gar are supposed to do. i can actually watch the tank he is in now and enjoy it! thanks again guys!
yeah thanks. it was getting to the point were i thought i was going to come home to a dead or seriously injured fish. i really thought he was going to break is back.
i did a water change last night and he was great through the whole thing.
he was also doing fine this morning when i got around for work. it just makes me happy every time i look in and see him swimming normally.
now i cant wait to get my tropical gar grown out so they can live in the same tank. they will be an awesome combo!
My spotted gar does something similiar, on and off. I was thinking it could be ammonia or that the aquarium needed to cycle but this has been going on and off for about 5 months. He basically goes to a corner and rubs his nose up and down endlessly for hours at a time. He did this alot the first month or two then stopped completely for a month or so and now hes started back up for the last few weeks. He doesnt hit hard at all but at times he does rub his nose somewhat raw. Sometimes while doing this though he will shake his head somewhat violently and hit the sides of his snout of the glass. I was pretty sure it was ammonia but I changed zeolites about 1 month ago (he was fine then) and shortly after he started back up. I load my filter up with a large excess of zeolite so I'm not sure about ammonia any more. I have found that when I cover the outside of the aquarium in one of his favorite corners to do this in he will stop. Very odd. Glad yours stopped. Hope he doesnt start again.
Yeah he has has one corner that he does it in 97% of the time. In the last day or two he has been splitting (50:50) between that corner and the other front corner. His nose is taking a beating. I think Im going to move him out to the bog in the pond.
when mine did it, it was always in the same spot too. i think it has something to do w/ the direct sun that comes through a window on that side of the tank. i hang a towel over that side of the tank until the sun moves to the other side of the building. this seems to be working fine. maybe you should give this a shot before moving him?
