I normally feed fresh tilapia but it hasn’t been available lately so I’m thinking about cod. Any other fresh fish recommendations are a appreciated. It’s mainly for polys and a pike cichlid

I looked it up, lol no I haven’t tried that, is it pretty good? I use frozen silver sides sometimes but they seem to like tilapia better

You could try it until you can get Tilapia. It's ok but my fish like Tilapia better lol. Do you have a Walmart near you because that's where I get Tilapia from most of the time.

That’s where I get my tilapia from too, they’ve been out for the last two weeks and I’m down to my last piece, I’ll try the smelt tho, thanks for the tip, I hadn’t heard of that

I feed my freshwater fish, salt water fish trimmings quite often, less chance of parasites than using fresh water fish, although not 100%.
Some salt water species are a bit too oily, so I raw use red snapper, Chilean sea bass, needlefish, even the trimmings from Mahi Mahi.
Because I live on an island, where fishing is a major source of income and protein for the locals (and me), these are all readily available.
My cichlids don't like oily fish such as tuna, or those red meat type

I think cod should be fine, but just a cautionary tale, I bought some cod at Costco last week and while cutting it (to cook for family), there was a brownish parasitic worm and after some googling seems like a nematode that primarily lives in herring and cod species. Again no expert on this but just be cautious that there are chances of parasites. Although now I think about it, there are chances for parasites in tilapia, smelt, and everything so I’m still conflicted lol. Hope this was somewhat inciteful?

That’s a good idea, I’m in Arizona so I’ll have to buy my saltwater fish, but I’ll see what’s available. Thanks.

Sounds kinda creepy lol I freeze all the fresh food I get for a few days to kill any parasites. But thanks, it was helpful to know someone feeds cod.
