Thanx to everyone who answered my question about my dempsey, I was pretty sure that's what he was, wich is why I named him JACK along time ago...:D Now I have a new issue... Jack had a 10" Pacu (Bob, our daughter named him Spongebob... Lol) for a tankmate for years, well sad to say Bob died a few days ago. We decided to move Jack, who is 8+" into our Pacu tank with 9 smaller 7" Pacu. Problem is now he hides in his log at mealtime...he comes out and swims around with the Pacu until I feed, then it's back into his log... Jack is my favorite of all our fish and I don't want to lose him. Will he starve or will he eventually come out to eat? We plan on moving him to a new Cichlid tank asap but it won't be for a while. Thanx

How big is you tank with 9 pacu?

from his tank profile .. 40gal tank with 9 smaller size Red Belly Pacu

40 gal is a typo right? You can't keep nine 7 inch fish in a 40 gallon tank. They are all severely stunted and will die. The adult size of red bellied pacu is like 2 feet.. or 2/3 as long as a 40 gallon tank and 8 inches longer than the tank is wide not to mention a foot longer than it is deep.

Your Jack is stressed from lack of tank space and lack of territory, or ill from bad water quality (fish hide and don't eat when ill)

9 Pacu?!?!?!!?How big is your tank???????The Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco multi-thousand gallon Amazon exhibit does not even have that many Pacu.........One Pacu is bad enough.......These fish should only be for large ponds........As for the JD, he will eventually come out.......Give or take a week, the cichlid will be hungry and begin a regular feeding routine........

Ok.. I hate to complain about the size of someone's tank . I think a lot of us on MFK have fish that shouldn't be in our tanks. You can extend that argument that fish shouldn't be kept in tanks and should be left outside.. not captured and flown in bags to the store and then sold to us for our enjoyment... but there is a point where it goes beyond keeping something as a pet that might be better left in the wild because it's not domesticated, and cruelty to animals.

My suggestion is to euthanize or rehome every pacu. They can be given to people with bigger tanks or you could build something huge for them. Tough lesson to learn but has to be done. I think you will be hard pressed to rehome that many monsters, and i doubt anyone here has the finances to care for 9 pacu.

40gal tank with 9 smaller size Red Belly Pacu,a Cichlid, and a Pleco.

Euthanasia or re homing as stated above. Or build a several thousand gallon enclosure for them. I have a 350g coming that's going to hold the two i own, and that's probably a little cruel, but at least they don't have to live in a 40g, right?

26gal tank with 5 Neon tetras, a Black Tetra, 4 Tiger Barbs, 2 Opaline Gourmi, a Dwarf Danio, and a Rainbow Shark.

I don't think the tiger barbs should be with other fish. I'd rehome them and the dwarf danio (or get him some school mates). Move the rainbow shark to the 40 gallon once the pacu are gone.

10gal tank with 20+ Guppies and what we think is a Pluppy??

Reduce the number of guppies, give the females away to kids or petstore or something. Keep the males.

8 gal. tank with 3 Mollies and 3 Neon Tetras.

Move the neon tetras to the 26 gallon tank with the other neons. Rehome the mollies or purchase a larger tank like a 20 long for them they belong in their own brackish water tank.

First let me say, for the record, we are trying to rehome the Pacu. We didn't Buy these fish, they were given to us... We wouldn't mind keeping one but not all 9...

Our 26 gal tank is actually sold as a 30 gal tank. I need to update my profile info. We no longer have the Rainbow Shark, he decided to flip out of the tank Sat night:(. We got a bad batch of Neon so we now have 4 Neons(we moved the 1 that was left from the Molly tank in with the 3 in the 30 gal tank), 2 Opalines, 4 Tigar Barbs, the Danio(we started with 4 but they flipped out of the tank before we got our hood), and 3 new Rasboras. I realize the Barbs and Opalines are fin nippers but ours get along extremely well and have never had issues.

As for my Guppies, I realize the tank is over crowded. I only started with 5 total and am trying to weed them out and only keep a few but it is a very peaceful tank and has extra airation and over sized filter.

If you KNOW you have too many fish, then what's your issue?

If you can get on here, you can post them on CL..

Not rocket science.

you realize you don't even have a big enough tank to keep one pacu? Start building a pond or get rid of all of them. i can't even focus on your jack dempsey when i'm distracted by so many pacus in a small tank. my guess is your fish is sick or stressed from the lack of space if you're really keeping 8 7+ inch fish in a 40 gallon.
