Does anyone have a suggestion??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You know as I stated in my post, we did not go out and buy all these Pacu.
We are NOT stupid! For the record I have contacted Steinharts Aquarium, Seaside Aquarium, Newport Aquarium, Portland Zoo, every fish store in Oregon and some in California, a Pacu site dedicated to Pacu, AND posted an add on CL. No it's not "rocket science"! We are desperately trying to save these gentle fish. I have had several of you say to just euthanize these fish (in my opinion, you shouldn't even be on this site if that's your only answer). These fish are so gentle I could pet them if I wanted to. I thought this was a fish lovers site, obviously I was wrong... For the record we have a 100 gal tank on the way to house them until we can find homes for them. I've found a home for 2 so far, just an fyi, not that any of you care. I have no doubt that I will get negative responses because that seems to be what this site is about... BTW if all you are going to do is send me nasty replies for trying to do something good please save your time and mine...

from his tank profile .. 40gal tank with 9 smaller size Red Belly Pacu

40 gal is a typo right? You can't keep nine 7 inch fish in a 40 gallon tank. They are all severely stunted and will die. The adult size of red bellied pacu is like 2 feet.. or 2/3 as long as a 40 gallon tank and 8 inches longer than the tank is wide not to mention a foot longer than it is deep.

Your Jack is stressed from lack of tank space and lack of territory, or ill from bad water quality (fish hide and don't eat when ill)
FYI... It is not his profile it's hers. Second I was wrong it's a 50 gal tank, NOT that that's any better but we have a 100 gal on the way to house these guys until they all have homes. I have found homes for 2 already and have contacted every aquarium in ca and Or, the zoo, and posted adds on CL and numerous fish sites. Also for the record their water quality is very good and they get atleast 30% changes weekly. I am NOT stupid and NEVER had intentions to keep all these fish. BUT I will NOT euthanize any of them!

Thank you so much!!! I should have made it more clear in my original post that I have no intentions of keeping these fish. My intention has always been to rehome them. Yours is the only possitive post I've recieved so again I thank you

The Thank you message was fo Kevin...I'vefound a home for 2 so far. Also for the record I was wrong abour there size they are about 6 inches not 7. Not that it matters with that many... Lol. Anyways thanks again for not putting me down for my efforts to rehome these guys. I really love them, they are so gentle they rub up against me every time I clean the tank... They really are awesome.

They are super cool and I myself like EVERYONE else on this forum at one point has bought one not knowing the full scale of what we were getting into. i would love to get another one, but even my 300 gallon is not big enough. Depending on where you live, you might also consider a pond in the area for them if that is an option.

Unfortunatly I am in Oregon so a pond...is not an option. My son bought these fish a couple years ago as "small piranhas" unfortunately he didn't know enough about fish to know the difference... I know these fish get huge however as I said these guys are atleast 2 yrs old and only 6", (obviously stunted I know) do you think there's a chance in the right invironment they will recover and grow? Also do you know what spurts their growth (so I can avoid it for now untill they find new homes)? Lol

So did your son buy them, or did someone give them to you?

"First let me say, for the record, we are trying to rehome the Pacu. We didn't Buy these fish, they were given to us..."

I see how my post could be confusing mshill90, sorry let me explain... My son is 30 so he does not live with me. He was told they were pirahnas and would not get very big. He had no idea what he had or how big they would get. He had them for a couple of years and no longer wanted them because they are now about 6" long (I originally posted 7" but I don't think they are quite that big). He gave them to me and I am working hard to rehome them. So far I have found homes for 2 and we are going to pick up a 100gal tank to give the rest more room till I can find homes for them. For the record I would NEVER have bought 9 Pacu, I am not that stupid and I know how big they get. We had one that died not long ago that was 10" and that was very small for a Pacu. I have no intentions of keeping them, only rehoming them. Hope that makes more sense...
