Our puppy decided to eat hunks of black plastic drain pipe and gardening twine and had to have emergency surgery yesterday, for $1500.

Seeing as he's an idiot and I cannot guarantee what he will decide to swallow I'm checking out pet insurance and figured I'd see if anyone on here has it and what company provides it and the monthly fees.

My brother looked into it and found it cost to much. Just put $50 a month away and dont leave anything that will fit in your dogs mouth where it can get to it. And make sure your dog gets all of its shots.

If they start life insurance for fish i'm down with gettting it.

All puppies will do this...if left unattended in easy access to everything they should not have... unless he has a disease which causes them to eat weird things.. in that case there is a food with special ingredients that turns them off to this practice.. my son has a dobie that ate rocks and had major intestinal surgery.. i am sorry for all your going through... so i wish you and puppy luck..

Jamie, yes their is dog insurance, no i havent used it. i think it was from iam's food, but dont recall. give the vet down by bank of A a call, they might have alot more info for you.

i have pet insurance. i know some see it as a rip off as most people will likely not use it unless the puppy does something like yours did.
i think its good for piece of mind. i cant afford £2k if my labrador breaks his leg and needs surgery to pin it (as an example). so i pay £60 and the insurance does.
its only £15 a month for that bit of protection. worth it in my opinion to make sure he gets the best care should something happen.

From what I've found so far it looks like it will cost between $20 and $30 a month for just about full coverage. If he has one more surgery that's $1500. At $20 a month ($240 a year) that would pay for itself if he has one more surgery in the next 5 years.

I've never had a dog that eats things he shouldn't be eating. He's 7 months old and ate (chewed and broke) a glass rain gauge he pulled out of the garden. This stuff he ate the other day was some of the corrugated 4" black drain pipe. Stuff no sane dog would eat. We've tried to collect up everything he could eat but as he's in a large fenced yard he keeps finding things. Hell, he even ate the plastic edge off the flower pots and has eaten full on rose bushes. He gets plenty of activity and attention and has another older dog companion so it's not like it's neurological. He's just retarded.

PetPlan (www.gopetplan.com) appears to be the best I've found so far. I can get coverage for up to $20,000 including hereditary diseases with a $50 deductible and 100% payback for $30 a month.

Hi, yes we do have our dogs insured with Pet Plan! Its been really useful, as our dogs have seriously cut themselves on the paws (why do idiots break glass bottles and leave them in the park where they (and children) play)!

Pet insurance also pays a percentage or decided amount of normal annual check-ups, spay/neuters expenses, vaccines, and heartworm medications. Its a great thing if you get it for a pet as a puppy as once there is a pre-determined condition, it won't cover for that. As a vet tech, I would recommend it to people who had animals which were pre-disposed to certain conditions (for instance, allergy testing can cost upwards of $500, or bloat can have a $3k surgery bill). Its not a bad idea if you can afford it. It can be a pain in the butt to submit your receipts for the reimbursement, but in an emergency situation it can pay you back with one event.

ask your vet about the dog disease of eating weird things... maybe he will suggest this food.. if you want i can find out details.. something missing in their body makes them do this.. what kind of dog is it..
