Yes, draining while adding new water is inherently draining some of the new water as well as the old....That makes the water change percentage less and, if you are testing water & changing it because of nitrates, causes more work for you with less benefit.

thats odd i have never had my nitrates over 20ppm and i have been doing changes like that for 5 years . i clean the gravel in the tank once a week, and let the water fill from the sink while my gravel cleaner just drains water. 15 minutes then i shut it all down.. my cichlids have grown almost 3" in 2 months .. when i am done i blast some prime in the tank and chill

sorry i just reread what i posted .. i am not trying to sound like a douche.. i am stating what i have had luck doing in keeping a very clean tank, and healthy . with the exception of the internal parasite issue i had recently after a new fish was brought in,but i was able to cure him ,and then them lol. i think this is a good topic

It's not odd. Its common sense. It has been explained many times now. Good luck.

its not bad, you probably are removing just enough and dont have a big bio load. It just isnt efficient.

i actually i over stocked in my 180 right now :( waiting to clear my 125 so i can move some fish into it .. i do run 2 rena xp4's and 2 rena xp3's on the tank

Piscine i thought your were getting mad;)

That's good. Still not the most efficient, but the way you do it probably minimizes the inefficiency I'm guessing. The way the OP suggested was highly inefficient.
