I think it is good quality imo it is better than the other pellets ive used which include hikari cichlid gold.

Some people get very wrapped up in having only the best ingredients which is fine. I don't personally think its 100% necessary. I've used kens for years and my fish are always healthy and grow like weeds. He has great prices and good service.

i always get complaments on the bright color of my fish from my lfs and family and friends and i use hikari never tried the other but my friends do and my fish look better lol just my opinion tho

Yeah I noticed that too, but it is only that food, all the rest of them have it listed.

Is this any better (this is their floating cichlid pellets):

INGREDIENTS: WHEAT, FISH MEAL, SOYBEAN MEAL, BLOOD PORK MEAL, STABILIZED FISH OIL, CAPSANTHIN, SPIRULINA, XANTHOPHYLL, KRILL MEAL, DI CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, VITAMIN A ACETATE, D-ACTIVATED ANIMAL-STEROL (D-3), VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT, NIACIN, FOLIC ACID, CALCIUM PANTOTHHENATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, THIAMINE, BIOTIN, DL ALPHATOCOPHEROL (E), L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE (C), COLOR ENHANCERS WITH RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE/GREEN PIGMENTS.

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS: CRUDE PROTEIN 45.0% MIN., CRUDE FAT 9.0% MIN., CRUDE FIBER 5.0% MAX., MOISTURE 10.0% MAX., ASH 10.0%.

Also, how do you tell which ingredients are good, and which are bad?

You can easily treat fish food as a dog food mostly.

The first 5 ingredients are going to be the main ones. Meals don't include water which can be good or bad depending. The lower the ash the better. And just like with dog food, people are going to think that if their animal looks healthy, they are using the best food and even though they are paying good money for crap ingredients, its all worth it.

Anyway, look for fish ingredients for a fish food. Avoid by products or non fish proteins like chicken meal and stuff like that since most fish have difficulty digesting what they are not used to. Of course this is going to vary between species, but just doing a in general one.
The first few ingredients should be a fish meal (or a bunch of different types of fish), shrimp meal, wheat germ, spirulina (if possible). Things like feather meal, corn, wheats and soys are cheap fillers which are high in carbs and as you guessed, just like dogs, fish do not need a lot of carbs.
Anyways, old saying at work, garbage in, garbage out.
If you switch to something with quality fish ingredients and less carbs, there will be less mulm produced. This is why some people on this site who were thinking about using a dog food for their fish wanted a grain free dog food like Acana and Candiae. But anyways, people are going to feed their fish whatever they want. A lot of people feed NLS and ingredient wise, its pretty good. I have yet to try it, but it helps if you know the language of pet food.

What ingredient that worries me is blood pork meal. Nice to know where the blood is coming from, instead of just blood meal. But it is coming from a non fish animal and most fish will have trouble using all of the nutrients (few left at this point) and this ingredient is normally used in lawn care. It's used to boost the protein level higher....so something I would avoid at all costs since you don't know what hormones were in the blood, medicines or other substances..
Just like I said, pick whatever food you want, but search teh ingredients and see what they really mean. A great site is AFFCO.

Okay, thanks for all the info. The only problem, though, is that nls, as well as other similar foods, is a lot more expensive than Hikari and Kens.

If you want a decent product for a great price, Kens is the way to go. I use Kens myself, along with fresh food and frozen to balance out the diet.
If you want to pay a premium for a premium product, look elsewhere.

Coincidently, I just oredered 30 lbs from Kens last night.

If I had to go with a kensfish I would pick the earthworm one, not great, but in no question, it is much better than any other kensfish's fish foods I have seen. Whitefish meal is a great ingredient as long as the ash contain is low.

The catfish one scares me since it does not say what the ingredients are.....it just states empty words.Marine Protein....anything found in the sea and extract proteins.....plant protein...anything found on a plant....It could even be P.Tenuis for all you know, lol. It can be too many different things. Depends on supplier, etc...
