Hello; Having just read thru the thread allow me to add: First i agree that the beneficial bacteria (bb) you need will be in the material from the established tank. Use some of that to seed the new tank with bb.

Next, what is not too clear is if there will be fish added to the new tank setup right away. If you plane to add fish then add some of the bb loaded material at around the same time as this will give the bb some ammonia to feed on from the fish waste.

If you plan to have the tank running without fish for a time, then you can add the bb loaded material and use the ammonia to keep the colonies fed. Not sure why this will be necessary as you can run the new tank without fish for a time and then grab some bb loaded media when it is time to add fish.

I suppose I should also mention that this can be accomplished by just adding fish food to the tank. I typically don't use ammonia. And yes I take a dirty filter pad from an established tank to really hurry it along!

Yes - just add media or substrate from your existing tank. I set up a few tanks this weekend and added a couple of handfuls of sand from an existing tank to the new ones...and added a sponge and/or box with media from an existing tank. Tanks are "cycled"
