does anyone know how to prevent bloat?

The only time i had a prob is when food that is hard to digest is given like krill. I had 5 small jack dempsey at one time and i feed them tetra bits all the time. I try somwthing diff one day small bit size plankton (same as krill) next day noticed they were fat and i didnt feed them. so i waited till next day and they got fatter! all died of bloat. had to be from the plankton. fish were only a couple of inches and i also think that plyed a role. I would say if the fish are of small size stay away from hard to digest food.

well i just lost all but 3 of my africans to bloat. i can say that i am anal retentive about my waterchanges, and learned that with africans NOT to add aquarium salt. i treated the whole tank for a few weeks on metro, epson salt-i tried everything. i have one that is dying today..

i think i have narrowed it down to the diet. i was feeding my africans krill (a big no no i guess), spirulina, and omega one pellets. but they were getting soft krill crumbles everyday, and i think this led to their demise... white poo.. not eating, and puffing up like balloons.

the only ones who are unaffected today are my female red empress and a very skinny male sci. fryeri.

i also believe that for about the first year i was adding regular Aquarium salt... and i have stopped using salt on all my tanks. from what i have read (very little info on misusing salts with africans btw) i was making a mistake in using salt at all.. and should have been using rift lake salts.

too late now.

I like to point out bloat and protein correlation . I dont think its all about protein in the diet that causes bloat. I got a friend who feeds his flowerhorn with only shrimps.
till the day he got him, his Flowerhorn is 7 inches now with a big kok, healthy.
And on the other hand me.
I was feeding my fishes with varied diet like tetrabits, bloodworm, shrimp, pea.
and one fine day i fed them chicken liver , my hungry insane green terror ate like he will never feed again.
and now he is suffering from stringy poo.and not eating.
so what i feel its all about live feed that causes the error.
wether its fishes, or meaty products.
in my opnion, its better to fast the fishes for 1 day, then next day fed them peas.then follow your cycle.
Also i have seen in some food products (local ones), they use high contents of steroids, color enhancers which may affect the fish.

And i got a Flowerhorn from my friend who is suffering from white stringy poo.
its been 3 weeks and he is not eating anything, moves slowly, i tried everything including
metro, salt, i even force fed him the medicine.
no help
and all i am doing is adding medicine to the tank and waiting for him to recover.:(
I HATE THIS STOMACH AILMENT diseases.
in fishes.

from what ive read so far, metronidazole will stop the infestation (parasitic or bacterial-whichever it is-they are still unclear), but wont exactly CURE the fish back to health.

so if the fish is so far gone, metro really wont do much. maybe im wrong, but this is my interpretation. i still have 3 africans left-none eating, all hiding in the rockwork. treating bloat is a lost cause for me..

Well now, instead of having to treat bloat im working on preventing it. I have only had it with beani (1"-8")and haitiensis (1"-4"). And what ive noticed so far with mine is, that it is stress related. and once they are stressed its what you do after that ie; food, Water changes, tankmates, temp, meds.
So my first objective is to ensure that when i introduce them into their tank, i wont have to move them or upgrade tank size for some time. preferrebly it will be their permanent tank.
Then i use "Ultra Cure PX" when feeding. It helps to control intestinal parasites, prevents secondary infections, and contains pheromones to enhance eating. Active ingredients: Metronidazole, flubenol,Praziquantel. This is a 3 day treatment. And i use this immediately upon arrival.
I will do 25-40% W/C every other day or so pending on whether my day allows it.
Feed twice a day with sprulina or mixed flake.2-3 times a week ill treat with brine shrimp, bloodworms, or krill.
I have had a beani at 6"+ that ate everything i gave her. then i moved her and a couyple others. the others died within a week. she hid all the time and hardly ate at all. I introduced a male Hait 6" into her tank. she came out to greet him, they did a lil dance. then i put a divider up so not to lose or damage either one. Then the beani started eating only krill and started coming out. The Male Hait i never had a problem with. He would eat anything and everything, i never had any bloat problem with him.
