that is a mayan aka false red terror or false festae
mayan and false red terror are all names they can be called but to call them a "false festae" just doesn't make sense not even in common name terms, festae is a specific species name and you can't just say something is a false species, if you're going to use the species name in a common name then you would use the one that pertains to the fish not what doesn't.

but yeah both of those fish look like mayans and yeah they can live in pretty much any salinity, and they are mean little SOBs, wait till they settle into your tank and you will have to keep an eye out on how mean they are to your other fish, i haven't had one of these guys but im pretty sure that once they are mature they are best kept alone/paired with no other cichlids in the tank

that cool!, they must be a vary primitive cichlid and retain the proper kidneys to drink salt water.

Indeed, you can catch your fill of them throughout the everglades. From the north part of the glades all the way down to the first part of florida bay. I have seen them swimming in mangrove swamps which were also inhabited by snook, tarpon and redfish.

Check this link from the University of Florida:
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Descript/MayanCichlid/MayanCichlid.html

That account states that they have been seen spawning near coral reefs.

I have a 14" male and don't think he is finished growing. Ken

14" ? That would be a an absolute monster mayan. I have kept many of them over the years and have caught even more down in south florida. I have never seen one approaching that size.

If yours is 14",then that is a very unique fish.

It's kind of hard to tell from the pics but i would say your best bet is to look at the dorsal fin of each. The one with a black spot on the dorsal is the female. the other is male as long as it doesn't have the spot.

I had a 14" as well. He ended up stealing my male Salvini's mate. It was the female Salvini's fault though. They were in a 250 gal tank and she would keep swimming to the other side of the tank and flirting with the male Uropthalmus until he took her for his own. The male Salvini was only 9" so he had no say in the matter.

i got a mayan about a inch and a half long out of a ditch down here in central florida.i was nettin some feeders and got him and threw him in my 135 gal turtle tank.
