If you can get in trouble for claiming to be a rescue when you aren't a certified non-profit? There's a local craigslist posting of someone asking for unwanted reptiles and claiming he's a rescue but doesn't have his 501(c)3 because he "doesn't see the need for it". Can he get in trouble for this?

its not illegal to rescue animals that are legal to own.

When I buy fish, I always say inside that im adopting them...doesn't feel right OWNING an animal. I assume its the same thing he wants to rescue them, not get free pets. sounds more legitimate.

I don't know just seems funny how he's claiming to be a rescue but when I email him he says he isn't and that he just doesn't see the reason to claim tax exempt status. If you are begging for free animals for the sake of having said animals for yourself or turning around and selling the animals that you get for free - that's not a "legit" rescue in my opinion.

And I know it's not illegal to take an animal out of a bad situation if the animal is legal to own. But I thought claiming to be an actual rescue may be. Apparently I'm wrong.
