Does aquarium height matter for most fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do extra tall aquariums help in any way in terms of territory and space for fish versus standard sized tanks with the same footprint? Like if you had a 225 over a 180 or a 90/110 over a 75 gallon would it enable you to get more fish and give your fish more territory or is it just empty gallons?
it makes it a lot easier to maintain water quality. More water is always easier to distribute nitrate more evenly. "The solution for pollution is dilution" is the phrase I remember hearing years ago

I like my taller tank as a community setup. That way I have layers of populations and my top and bottom dwellers don't feel cramped as much. I have surface layer, upper water, mid water, lower, and bottom in my 450 but I keep smaller fish than most in a tank that size, it is 30" tall

what are the dimensions on that monster?

Agree with Ponera.

Lots of good advice above. Some made me chuckle too :)

Just wanted to note that there is no such thing as useless gallons in any tank. The closer one is to a river or a lake, the better.

But even more seriously, Oddball Oddball teaches us that larger volume is essential in instantly diluting nitrite and sparing our pets brown blood disease. The main problem with too large a fish in a too small a tank is not the inadequacy of swimming space, as horrible as it is, but the nitrite poisoning. Or so I understood him. Even if your nitrite test reads zero ppm.

I did get a good deal on the 180 so I'm not that bummed I didn't get the biggest possible popular tank size that's redily available for he space I had. And i know the 225 will handle bio load better, that's a given. And it would have been cooler to have a taller tank but at least it's the same footprint.

Bio load aside, would have I been able to get more fish for the 225 space wise(bio load won't be a problem with good filtration and weekly water changes).
