I'd say if you want to speed up the process, try a fishless cycle and manually add the ammonia...
I have used cycle and bio spira. While the bio spira was expensive, I did see results on one tank that was cycling. I now have 6 tanks set up 
, and used bio spira on all 6 of them at set up. My first two tanks (29 and 20) didn't seem to cycle any quicker or only slighly quicker. Some of the rest of them did cycle, but I added cycle to the water three days after biospira.
My opinion is that bio spira does help, but isn't absolutely necessary if you are patient, which I am not.

ive used cycle and personally i think its crap. didnt do anything at all for me. i just throw a filter from an established equarium on to the new tank along with some aquarium H2O and that does it.
