Does carbon remove chlorine?

Just because you have carbon in your filter, doesn't mean that it will remove chlorine...but you can buy a carbon filtration unit at Home Depot that will remove chlorine...

Carbon filtering is a method of filtering that uses a piece of activated carbon to remove contaminants and impurities, utilizing chemical adsorption. Each piece of carbon is designed to provide a large section of surface area, in order to allow contaminants the most possible exposure to the filter media. Carbon filters are most effective at removing chlorine, sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. They are not effective at removing minerals, salts, and dissolved inorganic compounds.
Typical particle sizes that can be removed by carbon filters range from 0.5 to 50 micrometres. The particle size will be used as part of the filter description. The efficacy of a carbon filter is also based upon the flow rate regulation. When the water is allowed to flow through the filter at a slower rate, the contaminants are exposed to the filter media for a longer amount of time.

carbon does almost nothing just remove smell and polish the water its mainly for viewing purpose

your talking about a reverse osmosis filter

No, no he's not. ;) RO and chlorine filters are two very different things. There is no need for mineral replenishment in chlorine filtered water. Not true with RO.

im not a chem major, but i do remember seeing there is a carbon filter thing that takes out chlorine that people put on the tap . how effective is it? i would have no idea.... but just saying, they do exist.

and with logic, if you just have a bag of activated carbon sitting in ur tank, and you just add tap water into the tank, if your water source's chlorine concentration is pretty high. ur fish will suffer( or even death ) before the carbon can suck it all in....

activated carbon DOES remove chlorine.

the catch being in an aquarium situation, you have many other organics in there that will quickly fill the binding sites for adsorption, so its not very effective.

use dechlorinator.

ps this is how "brita" water filters work. its just carbon. takes the chlorine taste out by adsorbing chlorine.

Keep in mine "Chlorine" and "Chloramine" are two different chemicals. Chlorine is a gas that can aerate out over time(dissipate) and Chloramine is ammonia based which can not. Activated carbon will eventually remove them from the water but in time. It won't remove it right away unless it is design to like a water filter. But the filter can be old and not working properly. Water conditioner is the best bet. It is relatively cheap compared to the cost of killing your fishes. Good Luck.
